وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمُفنٍsurely exhausting دَمعَthe tears of عَينِيَmy eye بِالبُكاwith weeping
وَإِنّي لَمُفنٍ دَمعَ عَينِيَ بِالبُكا
حِذاراًin dread لِماof what قَدalready كانَhas happened أَوor هُوَit كائِنُis to come
حِذاراً لِما قَد كانَ أَو هُوَ كائِنُ
Indeed, I am wearing away my eyes’ tears with weeping,
And I am surely exhausting my eye's tears with weeping,
in dread of what has already been, or is yet to be.
in dread of what has already happened or is yet to come.
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَخشىfearing أَنthat تَكونَwould be مَنِيَّتيmy death
وَما كُنتُ أَخشى أَن تَكونَ مَنِيَّتي
بِكَفِّيَby my own hand إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat ماwhat حانَhas come due حائِنُis bound to come
بِكَفِّيَ إِلّا أَنَّ ما حانَ حائِنُ
I never feared that my death would be
And I did not fear that my death would come
by my own hand—yet what has come due is bound to come.
by my own hand—yet what is due must come to pass.

They said: tomorrow, or sometime thereafter, a calamity—
And they said: tomorrow, or after that, comes a calamity—
parting from a beloved already gone, or about to go.
parting from a beloved who has departed or is about to depart.
