    If I had two hearts, I would live with one,

    and set the other apart to be tormented in love for you.

    لا العَيشُ يحلُو لَهُ ولا الموتُ يَقْرَبُ

    But I have a heart that passion has possessed;

    life is not sweet to it, nor does death draw near.

    Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who mistreats it,

    it suffers the agony of death while the child plays.

    For the child has no sense to pity its plight,

    nor does the bird have both wings free to fly away.
