وَحَدَّثتُ نَفسي بِالفِراقِ أَروضُها

فَقالَت رُوَيداً لا أَغُرُّكَ مِن صَبري

فَقالَت رُوَيداً لا أَغُرُّكَ مِن صَبري

I spoke to my soul of parting, seeking to tame it.

And I spoke to my soul of parting, to tame it.

It said, “Gently—do not let my patience deceive you.”

Then it said, "Gently—I will not mislead you about my patience."

فَقُلتُ لَها فَالهَجرُ وَالبَينُ واحِدٌ

فَقُلتُ لَها فَالهَجرُ وَالبَينُ واحِدٌ

فَقالَت أَأُمنى بِالفِراقِ وَبِالهَجرِ

فَقالَت أَأُمنى بِالفِراقِ وَبِالهَجرِ

I told it, “But estrangement and separation are one and the same.”

Then I said to it, "So estrangement and separation are one and the same."

It said, “Am I to be beguiled with promises of parting and estrangement?”

Then it said, "Am I to be afflicted with parting and estrangement?"
