أَقولُI say لِأَصحابيto my companions وَقَدand already طَلَبواthey sought الصِلاfire's warmth
تَعالواcome اِصطَلواwarm yourselves إِنif خِفتُمُyou fear القُرَّthe bitter cold مِنfrom صَدريmy breast
I say to my companions, who have sought a fire's warmth:
Come—if you fear the cold, take your warmth from my breast.
فَإِنَّfor indeed لَهيبَthe blaze النارِof fire بَينَbetween جَوانِحيmy ribs
إِذاwhen ذُكِرَتis mentioned لَيلىLayla أَحَرُّhotter مِنَthan الجَمرِembers
For the blaze of fire between my ribs,
Whenever Layla is mentioned, is hotter than embers.
فَقالواthen they said نُريدُwe want الماءَwater نَسقيwe give drink وَنَستَقيand we draw water
فَقُلتُso I said تَعالواcome فَاِستَقواthen draw الماءَwater مِنfrom نَهريmy river
They said, 'We want water, to give drink and draw for ourselves.'
I said, 'Come, then draw water from my river.'
فَقالواthen they said وَأَينَand where النَهرُthe river قُلتُI said مَدامِعيmy tears
سَيُغنيكُمُwill spare you دَمعُtears الجُفونِof the eyelids عَنِfrom الحَفرِdigging
They said, 'And where is the river?' I said, 'My tears.'
The tears of my eyelids will spare you digging.
فَقالواthen they said وَلِمand why هَذاthis فَقُلتُso I said مِنَfrom الهَوىlove
فَقالواthen they said لَحاكَmay He curse you اللَهُGod قُلتُI said اِسمَعواlisten to عُذريmy excuse
They said, 'And why is this?' I said, 'From love.'
They said, 'May God curse you!' I said, 'Hear my excuse.'
أَلَمhave you not تَعرِفواknown وَجهاًa face لِلَيلىof Layla شُعاعُهُits radiance

Have you not known Layla's face, whose radiance,
When she appears, makes the sun and full moon needless?
يَمُرُّpasses بِوَهميthrough my imagination خاطِرٌa thought فَيَؤُدُّهاso it burdens her

A thought passes through my imagination and burdens her,
And my thought of her wounds her, even without seeing her.
مُنَعَّمَةٌdelicately nurtured لَوif قابَلَfaced البَدرَthe full moon وَجهُهاher face

Delicately nurtured—if her face faced the full moon,
It would have a clear advantage over the full moon.

Softly swaying below, slender at the waist,

Full in both calves, fair and tender-skinned,
Her canine teeth spaced apart, her gums polished bright.
فَقالواthen they said أَمَجنونٌare you mad? فَقُلتُso I said مُوَسوِسٌbeset by whisperings

They said, 'Are you mad?' I said, 'Beset by whisperings.'
I roam the back of the deserts, from waste to waste.
فَلاso neither مَلَكُthe angel المَوتِof death المُريحِbringing relief يُريحُنيrelieves me
وَلاnor أَناI ذوpossessed of عَيشٍlife وَلاnor أَناI ذوpossessed of صَبرِpatience
Neither does the angel of death that brings relief relieve me,
Nor have I a life, nor have I patience.
وَصاحَتand cried out بِوَشكِat the imminence of البَينِparting مِنهاfrom her حَمامَةٌa dove
تَغَنَّتshe sang بِلَيلٍat night فيin ذُراthe crowns ناعِمٍlush نَضرِfresh
And a dove cried of imminent parting from her,
She sang by night high in a lush, fresh tree,
عَلىupon دَوحَةٍa spreading tree يَستَنُّflows swiftly تَحتَbeneath أُصولِهاits roots
نَواقِعُpools ماءٍof water مَدَّهُfed it رَصَفُclose-set stones الصَخرِof rock
Upon a spreading tree, beneath whose roots coursed
Pools of water fed by closely set rocks.
مُطَوَّقَةٌcollared طَوقاًa collar تَرىyou see فيin خِطامِهاher halter
أُصولَroots سَوادٍof blackness مُطمَئِنٍّresting عَلىupon النَحرِthe upper chest
Ringed with a collar, in her halter you could see
The roots of blackness resting upon her breast.
أَرَنَّتshe trilled بِأَعلىat the top of الصَوتِthe voice مِنهاfrom her فَهَيَّجَتso she stirred
فُؤاداًa heart مُعَنّىtormented بِالمَليحَةِby the beautiful one لَوif only تَدريshe knows
She trilled at the top of her voice and stirred
A heart tormented by the fair one—if only she knew.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her عوديsing again فَلَمّاand when تَرَنَّمَتshe trilled
تَبادَرَتِrushed العَينانِthe two eyes سَحّاًpouring profusely عَلىupon الصَدرِthe chest
So I said to her, 'Sing again'; and when she trilled,
Both my eyes rushed to pour torrents upon my breast.
كَأَنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart حينَwhen جَدَّbecame earnest مَسيرُهاher journey
جَناحُthe wing غُرابٍof a raven رامَsought نَهضاًto rise إِلىtoward الوَكرِthe nest
It was as though my heart, when her journey began in earnest,
Were a raven's wing seeking to rise toward its nest.
فَوَدَّعتُهاso I bade her farewell وَالنارُand the fire تَقدَحُstrikes sparks فيin الحَشاthe vitals
وَتَوديعُهاand bidding her farewell عِنديto me أَمَرُّbitterer مِنَthan الصَبرِaloes
So I bade her farewell while fire struck sparks within my vitals,
And bidding her farewell is bitterer to me than aloes.
وَرُحتُand I departed كَأَنّيas though I يَومَon the day راحَتdeparted جِمالُهُمtheir camels
I was given to drink دَمَblood الحَيّاتِof snakes حينَwhen اِنقَضىended عُمريmy life
And I departed as though, the day their camels left,
I had been given snakes' blood to drink when my life ended.
أَبيتُI spend the night صَريعَstruck down الحُبِّby love دامٍbleeding مِنَfrom الهَوىpassion
وَأُصبِحُand I greet the morning مَنزوعَtorn out الفُؤادِthe heart مِنَfrom الصَدرِthe breast
I spend the night struck down by love, bleeding from passion,
And greet the morning with my heart torn from my breast.
رَمَتنيshot at me يَدُthe hand الأَيّامِof days عَنfrom قَوسِa bow غِرَّةٍof heedlessness
بِسَهمَينِwith two arrows فيinto أَعشارِthe fragments قَلبيof my heart وَفيand into سَحريmy lungs
The hand of days shot at me from a bow of heedlessness,
With two arrows into the fragments of my heart and into my lungs,
بِسَهمَينِwith two arrows مَسمومَينِpoisoned مِنfrom رَأسِthe summit شاهِقٍa lofty height
فَغودِرتُso I was left مُحمَرَّreddened التَرائِبِthe collarbones وَالنَحرِand the upper chest
With two poisoned arrows from a lofty summit,
So I was left with reddened collarbones and throat.
مُنايَmy heart's desire دَعينيleave me فيin الهَوىlove مُتَعَلِّقاًbound
فَقَدfor indeed مِتُّI have died إِلّاexcept أَنَّنيthat I لَمnot يُزَرbeen visited قَبريmy grave
My heart's desire, leave me bound in love,
For I have died—save that my grave has not been visited.
فَلَوso if كُنتِyou were ماءًwater كُنتِyou would be مِنfrom ماءِthe water of مُزنَةٍa raincloud

If you were water, you would be water from a raincloud,
And if you were sleep, you would be the light slumber of dawn,
وَلَوand if كُنتِyou were لَيلاًa night كُنتِyou would be لَيلَa night تَواصُلِof union

And if you were a night, you would be a night of union,
And if you were a star, you would be the full moon traveling through the dark.
