أَقولُI say وَقَدand already صاحَcried out اِبنُson of دَأيَةَDaʾyah غُدوَةًat dawn
بِبُعدِof the remoteness of النَوىseparation لاmay not أَخطَأَتكَmiss you الشَبائِكُthe snares
I say, after Ibn Daʾyah, the raven, has cried at dawn
Of distant parting: may the snares not miss you!
أَفيis it on كُلِّevery يَومٍday رائِعيfrightening me أَنتَyou رَوعَةًa fright
بِبَينونَةِwith the separation of الأَحبابِthe loved ones إِلفُكَyour mate فارِكُloathing her mate
Must you strike terror into me every day
With the separation of loved ones? May your mate loathe you!
وَلاand may not بِضتَyou lay فيin خَضراءَa green tree ماas long as عِشتَyou live بَيضَةًan egg
وَضاقَتand may narrow بِرَحبَيهاdespite their full breadth عَلَيكَupon you المَسالِكُthe paths
And may you never lay an egg in a green tree as long as you live,
And may the paths, for all their breadth, close in on you!
وَفارَقتَand may you leave أُمَّthe mother of الأَفرُخِthe fledglings السوءِwicked عَنout of قِلىًhatred
وَناحَتand may she wail عَلىover اِبنَيكَyour two sons الضَروسُthe fierce, biting one المُماحِكُthe quarrelsome one
And may you leave the mother of the wicked fledglings out of hatred,
And may the fierce, quarrelsome one wail over your two sons!
وَأَصبَحتَand may you become مِنfrom بَينِseparation from الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones هالِكاًperishing
كَماjust as أَناI مِنfrom بَينِseparation from الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones هالِكُperishing
And may you perish from parting with loved ones,
Just as I am perishing from parting with loved ones.
