I remembered Layla and the years gone by,
I recalled Layla and the past years
and days when we feared no one who would forbid our play.
And days when we feared no censurer
وَيَومٍand a day كَظِلِّlike the shadow of الرُمحِthe spear قَصَّرتُI shortened ظِلَّهُits shadow

And a day like a spear's shadow—I shortened its shadow
And a day when in Layla's shade my shade shortened
with Layla; it diverted me, though I had not been at play.
She distracted me, though I was no wanton

At Thamdayn, Layla's fire appeared, while my companions
With two braziers Layla's fire kindled, and my companions
at Dhat al-Ghada drove the swift riding camels onward.
With limpid wine that flows from the wine-skins
فَقالَso said بَصيرُthe keen-eyed man of القَومِthe company أَلمَحتُI glimpsed كَوكَباًa star

The keen-eyed man of the company said: I glimpsed a star
The wise one of the folk saw a star
appearing alone in the blackness of night, to the south.
Rise in the night's darkness, lone and Yemenite
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him بَلrather نارُthe fire of لَيلىLayla تَوَقَّدَتflared

So I told him: rather, Layla's fire has flared
I said to him, "Nay, but Layla's fire blazed up
at Aliya; its light rose high and appeared to me.
High, so its light appeared to me."
فَلَيتَso would that رِكابَthe mounts of القَومِthe company لَمnot تَقطَعِcrossed الغَضىal-Ghada

Would that the company's mounts had not crossed al-Ghada,
Would the riders had not cut across the sands!
and that al-Ghada had walked beside the mounts for nights.
Would that the sands had swallowed the riders by night!
فَياso O لَيلَLayla كَمhow many مِنof حاجَةٍa need ليfor me مُهِمَّةٍurgent

O Layla, how many an urgent need I have,
O night, how many grave affairs I have
yet when I visit you at night, I cannot tell what it is.
When I come to you - I know not what they are!

My two friends, if you do not weep for me, I shall seek
O my friends, if you will not weep for me, I will seek
a friend who, when I exhaust my tears, will weep for me.
A friend who, when I shed tears, will weep for me.

I climb the heights only out of longing,
I mount no steed but restively,
and recite poetry only to seek healing.
Nor chant poetry save plaintively,
وَقَدand sometimes يَجمَعُbrings together اللَهُGod الشَتيتَينِthe two separated ones بَعدَماafter

God may bring two separated people together after
Yet God may bring together the parted twain
they have become utterly convinced they will never meet.
After they thought they ne'er would meet again.
لَحىmay curse اللَهُGod أَقواماًpeople يَقولونَwho say إِنَّناindeed we

May God curse people who say: we
God assail folk who say, "We've found
have found, through all the ages, a cure for love.
All life long the love-cure is pain!"
وَعَهديand my recollection بِلَيلىof Layla وَهيَwhile she ذاتُwas wearing مُؤَصِّدٍa child's sleeveless shift

تَرُدُّshe brings back عَلَيناto us بِالعَشِيِّin the evening المَواشِياthe livestock
I remember Layla when she wore a child's sleeveless shift,
By Layla - that veiled one - I swear
bringing the livestock back to us in the evening.
She returns our eve-visit at morn.
فَشَبَّthen grew up بَنوthe sons of لَيلىLayla وَشَبَّand grew up بَنوthe sons of اِبنِهاher son

Then Layla's sons grew up, and her son's sons grew up,
Layla's sons are grown, her daughter's sons too,
while my bonds to Layla within my heart remained unchanged.
Yet my bonds with Layla are still binding me.

Whenever we sat somewhere we delighted in,
When we foregather where we take delight,
they spread tales about us until I grew weary of my place.
They draw her from me till I lose my place.

May God water Layla's women neighbors, carried far away
God water Layla's neighbors scattered far,
by separation, wherever they have settled in al-Matali.
The camels' grazing tore her tents away!

Neither poverty nor wealth has made me forget Layla,
Want or wealth, Layla forgot me never,
nor repentance, even when I embraced the pillars,
Until I embraced debauchery.

nor women who painted a thick-waisted, coarse-bodied woman
No women dyed bits of camel-skin dark
to resemble Layla, then displayed her to me.
To look like Layla, then displayed them to me.

My two friends, no, by God, I have no power over what
O my friend, by God I have no power
God decreed concerning Layla, nor what He decreed for me.
Over what God ordained for Layla or me.

He allotted her to another and tried me with love of her;
He decreed her for another, afflicted me with love of her -
why, then, did He not try me with something other than Layla?
Why not test me with other than Layla?
وَخَبَّرتُمانيand you two told me أَنَّthat تَيماءَTayma مَنزِلٌa dwelling

You two told me that Tayma is a dwelling
You told me Teyma is a halt
for Layla when summer casts its anchors.
For Layla, when summer casts down the curtain.
فَهَذيso these شُهورُthe months of الصَيفِsummer عَنّاfrom us قَدِalready اِنقَضَتhave passed

Now these summer months have passed us by;
These months of summer have sped from us
why does separation cast Layla to far-off places?
Yet Teyma hurls no missile at Layla for me.

Even if a tale-bearer's home were in al-Yamama,
Would that a tribesman's home were in Yamamah,
and mine in upper Hadramawt, he would find his way to me.
While mine stood on Hazramawt's heights!

And what have they—may God not improve their lot—
Why is their fortune blest in parting Layla from me,
to gain from Layla's severing my bonds?
When they do not treat her kindly?

Once I mastered my love for Layla, but unceasingly
High I raised love for Layla, but breach on breach befell,
unraveling and binding worked upon me until it mastered me.
Till all men knew of it.

O Lord, make love equal between me and her,
O Lord, then make the love between us balanced,
so it is evenly balanced, neither against me nor for me.
A burden on neither her nor me!

But rouses thoughts of her in me.

No mile I rode from Damascus, no Suhayl
Suhayl risen for the people of al-Sham, without rising for me.
Rose for Damascus folk, but rose for me.

Save my tears soaked my mantle through.

No south wind blew to her land by night
at night, without my spending the night leaning toward that wind.
But I was compliant to the wind.

They cannot guard the rhymes from me!

I confess to God that I love her -
This is what I have for her; what has she for me?
That is my stance; hers towards me, what?

God decreed kindness from her for others, not us,
God ordained the approved conduct from her to another,
and decreed longing and consuming passion from me as my lot.
Ordained for me longing and passion.

Indeed, what I hoped for, O Umm Malik,
O mother of Malik, the thing I hoped for
has grayed my temple and driven my heart mad.
Has turned my hair white and bewildered my heart.

Night after night I count the nights -
though once I lived an age without counting nights.
Long have I lived, not counting the nights.

I slip out among the houses, hoping

To speak of you to my soul in solitude.

Praying, I turn my face towards her
with my face, even if the place of prayer is behind me.
Though the praying-place is behind me.

No pagan am I, but love of her
and the enormity of heartache have baffled the healing physician.
And the sore anguish have confused the healer.

My two friends, Layla is the greatest of needs and wishes.
O my friend, Layla is the ultimate desire and aim -
Who will bring me Layla—or who will bring me to her?
Who then can avail me with Layla, or her with me?

And made tender eyes shed tears!

My two friends, what can I hope for from life, now that
O my friend, after seeing my want go unsold
I see my heart's desire sold, but not bought for me?
What do I hope for from life?

have ceased to love, though everyone knows what afflicts me.
Does she think the folk do not know my state?

More staunchly loyal despite the foe.

We are two lovers who have no hope of meeting; yet we see
Two friends who hope not for union, nor see
no other two lovers without their hoping to meet.
Two friends save hoping to meet!

Indeed, I am too shy before you for wishes to arise
By God, I am shy to offer you wished-for union
of union with you, or for you to appear to me in my wishes.
Or have you offer it, for shame.

I said, "How can I feign what is in me?"

Despair or lovesickness has struck me
So keep away from me, lest what afflicts me afflict you.
So refrain such talk, it fits you not.

If time drags on, O Umm Malik,
O mother of Malik, when Time proves long
then let the death-dealing fates have their way with me.
My weird and your weird will govern.
إِذاwhen اِكتَحَلَتtakes as kohl عَينيmy eye بِعَينِكِyour eye لَمnot تَزَلceases
بِخَيرٍin well-being وَجَلَّتand it clears غَمرَةًoverwhelming distress عَنfrom فُؤادِياmy heart
When my eye takes your eye as its kohl, it remains
When my eyes are darkened with yours, blessings ensue,
well, and clears overwhelming distress from my heart.
Light overwhelms my heart's gloom.
فَأَنتِso you الَّتيare the one who إِنif شِئتِyou wish أَشقَيتِyou make miserable عِيشَتيmy life
وَأَنتِand you الَّتيare the one who إِنif شِئتِyou wish أَنعَمتِyou bring ease to بالِياmy mind
You are the one who, if you wish, makes my life miserable,
You, if you wished, could make my life wretched;
and you are the one who, if you wish, gives my mind ease.
You, if you wished, could make me fortunate.
وَأَنتِand you الَّتيare the one who ماnot مِنany صَديقٍfriend وَلاnor عِداًfoe
يَرىsees نِضوَthe wasted remnant of ماwhat أَبقَيتِyou have left إِلّاexcept رَثىhe pities لِياme
And you are the one—no friend or foe
You it is - no friend nor foe can see
sees the wasted remnant you have left without pitying me.
The brightness you left in me, but will mourn me.
أَمَضروبَةٌis beaten لَيلىLayla عَلىbecause أَنthat أَزورَهاI visit her
وَمُتَّخَذٌand is counted ذَنباًa sin لَهاagainst her أَنthat تَرانِياshe sees me
Is Layla beaten because I visit her,
Forbidden me to visit Layla,
and is it counted a sin against her that she sees me?
Yet she is charged with my visiting her!
إِذاwhen سِرتُI travel فيacross الأَرضِthe earth الفَضاءِopen رَأَيتُنيI see myself
أُصانِعُI coax رَحليmy saddle أَنto يَميلَlean حِيالِياin my direction
When I travel across the open earth, I find myself
Roaming the wilderness, I find myself
coaxing my saddle to lean my way:
Urging my mount to incline towards her.
يَميناًrightward إِذاif كانَتshe is يَميناًto the right وَإِنand if تَكُنshe is
شِمالاًto the left يُنازِعنِtugs at me الهَوىpassion عَنfrom شِمالِياmy left
rightward, if she is to the right; and if she is
Right, if she be rightward, though Desire disputes with me
to the left, passion pulls at me from my left.
Over turning my left side thither.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَستَغشيcover myself up وَماand no بِيَin me نَعسَةٌdrowsiness
لَعَلَّperhaps خَيالاًa phantom مِنكِof you يَلقىmeets خَيالِياmy phantom
I cover myself up, though I have no drowsiness,
Drowsiness comes on me without fatigue -
hoping that a phantom of you might meet my phantom.
Perhaps a phantom of you will meet my phantom.
هِيَshe السِحرُis magic إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat لِلسِحرِagainst magic رُقيَةًa healing charm
وَأَنِّيَand I لاnot أُلفيfind لَهاfor her الدَهرَever راقَياa charm-healer
She is magic, except that magic has a charm against it,
It is sorcery, but sorcery has its counterspell
while I can never find anyone to break her spell.
While I find no charm against it all my days.
إِذاwhen نَحنُwe أَدلَجناjourney by night وَأَنتِand you أَمامَناbefore us
كَفاsuffices لِمَطاياناfor our mounts بِذِكراكِyour remembrance هادِياas a guide
When we journey by night, with you before us,
When darkness falls and you are before us,
your remembrance suffices as a guide for our mounts.
Your memory is enough to guide our mounts.
ذَكَتflared نارُthe fire of شَوقيmy yearning فيin فُؤاديmy heart فَأَصبَحَتso it became
لَهاit has وَهَجٌa blaze مُستَضرَمٌfiercely kindled فيin فُؤادِياmy heart
The fire of my yearning flared in my heart, and now
The fire of longing flared up within me
it has a fiercely kindled blaze within my heart.
Until its glow was fixed in my heart.
أَلاah أَيُّهاO you الرَكبُriders اليَمانونَYemeni عَرَّجواturn aside
عَلَيناto us فَقَدfor indeed أَمسىhas become هَواناًour love يَمانِياYemeni
Ah, you Yemeni riders, turn aside
Ho riders of Yemen, swing by us
to us, for our love has become Yemeni.
For Yemen of Najran is friendly ground!
أُسائِلُكُمI ask you all هَلwhether سالَflowed نَعمانُNuman بَعدَناsince we left
وَحُبَّand how dear إِلَيناto us بَطنُthe valley floor of نَعمانَNuman وادِياas a valley
I ask you: has Numan flowed since we left?
Let me ask, does Nu'man range after us still?
And how dear to us is the valley of Numan!
To us Nu'man's belly-vale is a homeland.
أَلاah ياO حَمامَيtwo doves of بَطنِthe valley of نَعمانَNuman هِجتُماyou two stirred
عَلَيَّin me الهَوىlonging لَمّاwhen تَغَنَّيتُماyou two sang لِياto me
Ah, two doves of Numan's valley, you have stirred
Ho my doves of Nu'man's belly-vale, you roused
my longing when you sang to me.
Passion in me when you sang to me!
وَأَبكَيتُمانيand you two made me weep وَسطَamong صَحبيmy companions وَلَمand not أَكُنI was
أُباليI mind دُموعَthe tears of العَينِthe eye لَوif كُنتُI were خالِياalone
You made me weep among my companions, though I would not
You made me weep amid my friends, careless
mind the tears of my eyes if I were alone.
Of tears, had I been solitary.
وَياand O أَيُّهاyou القُمرِيَّتانِtwo turtledoves تَجاوَباanswer one another
بِلَحنَيكُماwith your two melodies ثُمَّthen اِسجَعاcoo, both of you عَلَّلانِياconsole me, both of you
O you two turtledoves, answer each other
Ho two ring-doves, answer each other
with your two melodies; then coo and console me.
In your melody, then add rhymes about me!
فَإِنso if أَنتُماyou two اِسطَترَبتُماseek rapture أَوor أَرَدتُماyou two wish
لَحاقاًto reach بِأَطلالِthe ruins of الغَضىal-Ghada فَاِتبَعانِياthen follow me, both of you
If you two seek rapture, or wish
If you are confused, or wish to follow
to reach the ruins of al-Ghada, then follow me.
The ruins of the sands, then follow me!
أَلاah لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge ماwhat لِلَيلىails Layla وَمالِياand what ails me
وَماand what لِلصِباof youthful passion مِنfrom بَعدِafter شَيبٍgray hair عَلانِياhas overtaken me
Ah, would I knew what ails Layla and what ails me,
Would I knew what ails Layla, and what ails me,
and why youthful passion persists after gray hair has overtaken me.
What the youth remains to me, now grey hairs show!
أَلاah أَيُّهاO you الواشيtale-bearer بِلَيلىabout Layla أَلاdo you not تَرىsee
إِلىto مَنwhom تَشيهاyou report her أَوor بِمَنabout whom جِئتُI came واشِياas a tale-bearer
Ah, tale-bearer about Layla, do you not see
Ho you, Layla's lover, do you not see
to whom you report her—or about whom I came bearing tales?
Whom you court, or with whom you came a-wooing?
لَئِنeven if ظَعَنَdeparted الأَحبابُthe beloved ones ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكٍMalik
فَماyet not ظَعَنَdeparted الحُبُّthe love الَّذيwhich فيin فُؤادِياmy heart
Even if the beloved ones have departed, O Umm Malik,
If friends become viperish, mother of Malik,
the love within my heart has not departed.
The love in my heart is unchanging.
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord إِذsince صَيَّرتَYou made لَيلىLayla هِيَherself المُنىthe wishes
فَزِنّيthen beautify me بِعَينَيهاin her eyes كَماas زِنتَهاYou beautified her لِياfor me
O Lord, since You made Layla the sum of my wishes,
So, my Lord, since you made Layla the wish,
make me fair in her eyes, as You made her fair to me.
Favor me as you favored her with me!
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَبَغِّضهاthen make her hateful إِلَيَّto me وَأَهلَهاand her family
فَإِنّيfor indeed I بِلَيلىthrough Layla قَدalready لَقيتُhave encountered الدَواهِياcalamities
Otherwise, make her and her family hateful to me,
Else make her hateful to me, and her family -
for through Layla I have met calamities.
With Layla I have met tribulation.
عَلىfor مِثلِsomeone like لَيلىLayla يَقتُلُkills المَرءُa man نَفسَهُhimself
وَإِنand although كُنتُI am مِنconcerning لَيلىLayla عَلىupon اليَأسِdespair طاوِياfolding it within
For someone like Layla, a man would kill himself,
For one like Layla a man kills himself,
even though I keep despair of Layla folded within me.
Though I despair of Layla utterly.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنif ضَنّواthey withhold بِلَيلىLayla فَقَرِّباthen bring near, both of you
لِيَto me النَعشَthe bier وَالأَكفانَand the shrouds وَاِستَغفِراand seek forgiveness, both of you لِياfor me
My two friends, if they withhold Layla, bring close
O my friend, if they are niggardly with Layla, bring me
to me the bier and shrouds, and ask forgiveness for me.
Bier and shroud, and pray forgiveness for me!
وإنand if متI die منfrom داءthe sickness of الصبابةardent yearning فأبلغاthen convey, both of you
شبيهةto her who resembles ضوءthe light of الشمسthe sun منيfrom me سلامياmy greeting
And if I die of the sickness of yearning, then convey
And if I die from lovesickness, convey
my greeting to her who resembles the sunlight.
To the sun-like one my greetings.
