    I pass, turning aside from Layla’s house,

    And have not stopped there, though I burn with thirst.

    فَطَرفي عَنهُ مُنكَسِرٌ كَليلُ

    I pass, keeping away, though my love is within it;

    So my gaze turns away from it, downcast and weary.

    And my heart is embattled there—is there for me

    A way to my heart and the one who dwells in it?

    I hope to drink a second draught of Layla,

    Yet I have not drunk the first—how can the second be mine?
