أَرَقتُI lay sleepless وَعادَنيand visited me هَمٌّa grief جَديدُnew
فَجِسميso my body لِلهَوىfrom love نِضوٌa wasted wreck بَليدُlistless
I lay sleepless, and a new grief visited me.
I was sleepless, and a new worry returned to me,
So my body is wasted and listless from love.
So my body toward passion is numb and weary.
أُراعيI watch الفَرقَدَينِthe two Farqad stars مَعَwith الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades
كَذاكَthus الحُبُّlove أَهوَنُهُits mildest شَديدُsevere
I watch the two Farqad stars along with the Pleiades.
I stay up with the two eyelids and Pleiades,
Such is love: even its mildest is severe.
For love - its hardest is most severe.
I fell in love with مَليحَةَa lovely woman الخَدَّينِthe two cheeks وَرداًrosy
تُشابِهresemble حُسنَthe beauty of مَطلَعِهاher rising السُعودُthe auspicious Suʿūd stars
I fell in love with a rosy-cheeked beauty.
I compared the cheeks of a beautiful one to a rose,
The Suʿūd stars resemble the beauty of her rising.
Resembling the beauty of its rising in the morning.
أَهيمُI am love-maddened بِذِكرِهاby remembering her وَأَظَلُّand I remain صَبّاًlovesick
وَعَينيand my eye بِالدُموعِwith tears لَهاfor her تَجودُgives generously
I am maddened by thoughts of her and remain lovesick.
I rave with her memory and remain lovesick,
And my eye freely sheds tears for her.
And my eyes for her shed flowing tears.
أَلاah ياO لَيتَif only لَحدَكِyour grave كانَwere لَحديmy grave
إِذاwhen ضَمَّتembrace جَنائِزَناour bodies اللَحودُthe graves
Oh, if only your grave were mine,
Oh, if only your grave could be my grave,
When the graves embrace our bodies.
When our corpses are gathered by the shrouds!
