طَمِعتُ بِلَيلى أَن تَريعَ وَإِنَّما

طَمِعتُ بِلَيلى أَن تَريعَ وَإِنَّما

تُقَطِّعُ أَعناقَ الرِجالِ المَطامِعُ

تُقَطِّعُ أَعناقَ الرِجالِ المَطامِعُ

I hoped that Layla would return, yet it is only

I hoped that Layla would tend and feed me,

Desires that sever men's necks.

But she only cuts the necks of greedy men.

وَدايَنتُ لَيلى في خَلاءٍ وَلَم يَكُن

وَدايَنتُ لَيلى في خَلاءٍ وَلَم يَكُن

شُهودٌ عَلى لَيلى عُدولٌ مَقانِعُ

شُهودٌ عَلى لَيلى عُدولٌ مَقانِعُ

And I dealt on credit with Layla in seclusion, and there were no

Upright, credible witnesses against Layla.

Yet no veiled, upright witnesses were there for Layla.
