أَجَبتُI answered بِلَيلىwith Layla's name مَنwhoever دَعانيcalled me تَجَلُّداًmustering fortitude
عَسىperhaps أَنَّthat كَربيmy anguish يَنجَليwill lift فَأَعودُand so I recover
I answered 'Layla' to whoever called me, mustering fortitude,
Perhaps my anguish will lift and I shall recover,
وَتَرجِعُand returns ليto me روحُthe spirit of الحَياةِlife فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
بِنَفسِيَwith my own soul لَوif عايَنتَنيyou saw me لَأَجودُI am indeed yielding
And the spirit of life will return to me; for I
Am yielding up my soul—if you could see me.
سَقىmay water حَيَّthe camp of لَيلىLayla حينَwhen أَمسَتshe reached evening وَأَصبَحَتand she reached morning
مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth مُنهَلُّpouring الغَمامِthe clouds رَعودُthundering
May Layla's camp be watered, at evening and at dawn,
On earth, by a pouring, thundering cloud.
عَلىin كُلِّevery حالٍcircumstance إِنwhether دَنَتshe draws near أَوor تَباعَدَتshe goes far away
أَناI كَلِفٌenamored صَبٌّlovesick بِهاfor her وَعَميدُand love-stricken
In every circumstance, whether she draws near or goes far away,
I am enamored of her, lovesick and heartsick.
فَلاso neither البُعدُdistance يُسلينيconsoles me وَلاnor القُربُnearness نافِعيbeneficial to me
وَلَيليand my night طَويلٌlong وَالسُهادُand sleeplessness شَديدُsevere
So distance does not console me, nor does nearness help me;
And my night is long, and sleeplessness severe.
يَقولُsay لِيَto me الواشونَthe talebearers إِذas يَرصُدونَنيthey watch me
وَمِنهُمand among them عَلَيناover us أَعيُنٌspies وَرُصودُand watchers
The talebearers say to me as they watch me—
And among them are spies and watchers over us—
سَلاhas forgotten كُلُّevery صَبٍّpassionate lover حِبَّهُhis beloved وَخَليلَهُand his close companion
وَأَنتَyet you لِلَيلىfor Layla عاشِقٌa lover وَوَدودُand devoted
'Every lover has forgotten his beloved and his close companion,
Yet you are enamored of Layla and devoted to her.'
فَدَعنيso leave me وَماand what أَلقاهُI suffer it مِنof أَلَمِpain الهَوىpassionate love

بِنارٍwith a fire لَهاfor it بَينَbetween الضُلوعِthe ribs وَقودُfuel
So leave me to the pain of love I endure,
From a fire whose fuel lies between my ribs.
أُعالِجُI struggle with مِنfrom نَفسيmyself بَقاياremnants حُشاشَةٍa last flicker of life
عَلىupon رِمَّتيmy decaying body وَالروحُwhile the soul فِيَّwithin me تَجودُebbs away
I struggle with the last remnants of life within me,
Upon my wasted frame, as the soul within me ebbs away.
