وَأَجهَشتُ لِلتوبادِ حينَ رَأَيتُهُ

وَأَجهَشتُ لِلتوبادِ حينَ رَأَيتُهُ

وَهَلَّلَ لِلرَحمَنِ حينَ رَآني

وَهَلَّلَ لِلرَحمَنِ حينَ رَآني

And I burst into tears for al-Toubad when I saw it,

I wept for the ruins when I saw them,

And it proclaimed the All-Merciful's oneness when it saw me.

And praised the Merciful when He saw me.

وَأَذرَيتُ دَمعَ العَينِ لَمّا رَأَيتُهُ

وَأَذرَيتُ دَمعَ العَينِ لَمّا رَأَيتُهُ

وَنادى بِأَعلى صَوتِهِ وَدَعاني

وَنادى بِأَعلى صَوتِهِ وَدَعاني

And I shed my eye's tears when I saw it,

I shed tears when I saw it,

And it called out at the top of its voice and summoned me.

And it called to me in the loudest voice.

فَقُلتُ لَهُ أَينَ الَّذينَ عَهِدتُهُم

فَقُلتُ لَهُ أَينَ الَّذينَ عَهِدتُهُم

حَوالَيكَ في خِصبٍ وَطيبِ زَمانِ

حَوالَيكَ في خِصبٍ وَطيبِ زَمانِ

So I said to it: Where are those I once knew

I said, where are those I knew,

Around you, amid abundance and pleasant times?

Around you in the fertility and prime of time?

فَقالَ مَضَوا وَاِستودَعوني بِلادَهُم

فَقالَ مَضَوا وَاِستودَعوني بِلادَهُم

وَمَن ذا الَّذي يَبقى مَعَ الحَدَثانِ

وَمَن ذا الَّذي يَبقى مَعَ الحَدَثانِ

So it said: They have gone and entrusted their lands to me;

It said, they left and entrusted me with their lands,

And who is it that remains amid time's vicissitudes?

For who remains with the transient?

وَإِنّي لَأَبكي اليَومَ مِن حَذَري غَداً

وَإِنّي لَأَبكي اليَومَ مِن حَذَري غَداً

فِراقَكِ وَالحَيّانِ مُؤتَلِفانِ

فِراقَكِ وَالحَيّانِ مُؤتَلِفانِ

And indeed I weep today, for fear of tomorrow's

And I weep today in fear of tomorrow -

Parting from you, while the two clans are united—

Parting from you, while the living remain joined.

سِجالاً وَتَهتاناً وَوَبلاً وَديمَةً

سِجالاً وَتَهتاناً وَوَبلاً وَديمَةً

وَسَحّاً وَتَسجاماً إِلى هَمَلانِ

وَسَحّاً وَتَسجاماً إِلى هَمَلانِ

In bucketfuls and steady streams, in downpours and gentle, lasting rain,

Arguing and straying and weeping and darkness,

And pouring and streaming, even to overflowing.

And plain and valley up to Hamlan.
