Why do I see my camels settling, as though they were

Wailing women answering one another late at night in separate bands?

You shall never descend to the south of Muwaysil,

    And Qanā, Qarāqiraqayn, then al-Amrār.

Was I ignorant of who those people were whose blood I shed

With my own hand, without being taken unawares beside Tighār?

As for truce, there is no truce between us,

Save feigned ignorance—so I shall surely wear down Fazārah—

Save visits to one another atop every lean, long-legged steed,

Leading the fine steeds toward the army in a charge.

Then I shall surely drive the horses into the heart of your lands,

    Lean-flanked, leaving their foals behind,

Until they visit your lands and you see there

Carnage among you that makes eyes lower in dread.
