My brother, by God, is better than your brother,

When a champion finds nowhere to stand.

My brother, by God, is better than your brother,

When a shepherd finds no pasture.

My brother, by God, is better than your brother,

When modest women bare their anklets.

For him I killed your brother and the best of Sa‘d,

So, Hudhayf, be it war or peace.

    بِحَمدِ اللَهِ يَرعونَ البِهاما

    Tha‘labah son of Sa‘d repels war;

Praise be to God, they pasture the lambs and kids.

And self-seeking Murrah is spared the need for us,

By lame sheep that leave him standing.

And how can you speak of the steadfastness of the sons of Hajan,

When they grow weary and find no place to stand?

And but for the house of Murrah, you would have seen

Their forelocks shaking off the dust.
