بَدَأناwe began بِجَمعِwith the host of الصُفَّرَينِal-Suffarayn فَلَمand did not نَدَعwe leave
بَدَأنا بِجَمعِ الصُفَّرَينِ فَلَم نَدَع
لِغَسّانَfor Ghassan أَنفاًa nose فَوقَabove تِلكَthose المَناخِرِthe nostrils
لِغَسّانَ أَنفاً فَوقَ تِلكَ المَناخِرِ
We began with al-Suffarayn's host, and did not leave
Ghassan a nose above those nostrils,
صَبيحَةَon the morning صَاحَcried out الحارِثانِthe two Hariths وَمَنand those who بِهِwith him
صَبيحَةَ صَاحَ الحارِثانِ وَمَن بِهِ
سِوىexcept نَفِرٍa few men نَجتَذُّهُمwe cut them down بِالبَواتِرِwith keen-edged swords
سِوى نَفِرٍ نَجتَذُّهُم بِالبَواتِرِ
on the morning the two Hariths and those with him cried out,
save a few whom we cut down with keen-edged swords.
وَجِئناand we came إِلىto بُصرىBosra وَبُصرىand Bosra مُقيمَةٌremaining in place
وَجِئنا إِلى بُصرى وَبُصرى مُقيمَةٌ
فَأَلقَتso she cast إِلَيناto us بِالحَشاwith the innards وَالمَعاذِرِand the excuses
فَأَلقَت إِلَينا بِالحَشا وَالمَعاذِرِ
And we came to Bosra, while Bosra still stood,
so she cast her innards and her excuses before us.
فَضَضناwe broke open بِهاin her أَبوابَهاher gates ثُمَّthen قابَلَتconfronted
فَضَضنا بِها أَبوابَها ثُمَّ قابَلَت
بِناwith us العيسُthe pale camels فيin اليَرموكِYarmuk جَمعَthe host of العَشائِرِthe clans
بِنا العيسُ في اليَرموكِ جَمعَ العَشائِرِ
We broke open her gates there; then they confronted—
the pale camels bearing us—the clans' host at Yarmuk.
