وَلَقَدand indeed شَهِدتُI witnessed البَرقَthe lightning برقlightning تَهامَةٍTihamah
وَلَقَد شَهِدتُ البَرقَ برق تَهامَةٍ
يَهديguides المَقانِبَthe cavalry squadrons راكِبُthe rider of العِيّارِal-ʿIyyār (the mount)
يَهدي المَقانِبَ راكِبُ العِيّارِ
Indeed, I beheld the lightning—the lightning of Tihama.
And indeed I witnessed the lightning—the lightning of Tihamah.
The rider of al-ʿAyyār guides the cavalry squadrons,
The rider of al-ʿIyyār guides the cavalry squadrons,
فيin جُندِthe army of سَيفِthe sword of اللَهِGod سَيفِthe sword of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
في جُندِ سَيفِ اللَهِ سَيفِ مُحَمَّدٍ
وَالسابِقينَand the forerunners بِسُنَّةِfollowing the way of الأَحرارِthe freeborn men
وَالسابِقينَ بِسُنَّةِ الأَحرارِ
within the host of God’s Sword—the sword of Muhammad—
In the army of God's Sword, Muhammad's Sword,
and those foremost in the tradition of the freeborn.
And of the forerunners, following the way of freeborn men.
لَمdid not تَنفَرِجease عَنّيfrom me الأُمورُaffairs مُفَتَّناًsorely tried
لَم تَنفَرِج عَنّي الأُمورُ مُفَتَّناً
إِنَّindeed الخيارَthe best men هُمُthey بَنوsons of الأَخيارِthe virtuous
إِنَّ الخيارَ هُمُ بَنو الأَخيارِ
My affairs brought me no relief as I endured my trials;
Affairs did not ease for me, sorely tried as I was.
indeed, the best are the sons of the best.
Indeed, the best men are the sons of the virtuous.
