مَنَعتُكَI protected you مِنfrom قَرنَيthe two horns of قَباذٍQabadh وَلَيتَنيand would that I
تَرَكتُكَI left you فَاِستَركَتand then swarmed عَلَيكَupon you الحَظانِبُthe stocky warriors
I shielded you from Qabadh’s two horns; would that I
had left you, and the stocky warriors had swarmed upon you.
عَطَفَتI wheeled عَلَيكَtoward you المُهرَthe colt حَتّىuntil تَفَرَّجَتthey scattered
وَمَلَّتand grew weary مِنَof الطَعنِthe spear-thrusting الدَراكin rapid succession الرَواجِبُthe finger joints
I wheeled the colt toward you until they scattered,
and my finger joints wearied of incessant spear-thrusts.
أُجالِدُهُمI fight them وَالخَيلُwhile the horses تَنحَطُّplunge فيamong القَناthe spears
وَأَنتَwhile you وَحيدٌare alone قَدalready حَوَتكَhave surrounded you الكَتائِبُthe battalions
I fight them while the horses plunge among the spears,
while you are alone, already surrounded by battalions.
وَكائِنand how many هَزَمناwe routed مِنof كَتيبَةِa battalion of قائِدٍa commander
وَقَدand indeed عَجَمَتناhave tested us فيin الحُروبِwars العَجائِبُthe marvels
And many a commander’s battalion have we routed,
and war’s marvels have tested our mettle.
