أَلَمDid … not? تَرَناyou see us عَلىat اليَرموكِthe Yarmouk فُزناwe triumphed
كَماjust as فُزناwe triumphed بِأَيامِin the battle-days of العِراقِIraq
Did you not see us triumph at the Yarmouk,
as we triumphed in the battle-days of Iraq?
قَتَلناwe slew الرومَthe Romans حَتّىuntil ماnot تُساويthey were worth
عَلىat اليَرموكِthe Yarmouk مَفروقَa torn fragment of الوِراقِfoliage
We slew the Romans until they were not worth
at the Yarmouk even a shred of foliage.
فَضَضناwe shattered جَمعَهُمtheir host لَمّاwhen اِستَحالواthey turned
عَلىtoward الواقوصَةِal-Waqusa البُترِthe maimed الرقاقِthe frail
We shattered their host when they turned
toward al-Waqusa, maimed and frail,
غَداةَthe morning when تَهافَتواthey tumbled headlong فيهاinto it فَصارواand so they came
إِلىto أَمرٍa plight تَعَضَّلَproved grievous بِالذَواقِin the tasting
the morning they tumbled headlong into it and came
to a plight grievous to taste.
