حَنَنتَyou longed إِلىfor رَيّاRayya وَنَفسُكَthough your own self باعَدَتmade distant
مَزارَكَyour meeting-place مِنfrom رَيّاRayya وَشِعباwhile the two valleys كَماof you both (split possessive suffix) مَعاtogether
You longed for Rayya, though you yourself had distanced
You yearned for Rayy, but your soul distanced
your meeting-place from Rayya, while your two valleys lay together.
Your dwelling from Rayy and its people alike
فَماfor it is not حَسَنٌfitting أَنto تَأتِيَyou undertake الأَمرَthe matter طائِعاًwillingly
وَتَجزَعَand you become distraught أَنwhen داعيthe caller of الصَبابَةِardent longing أَسمَعاmade himself heard
For it is not fitting to undertake a thing willingly
So it's not good that you obey readily
and then become distraught when longing's caller makes himself heard.
And are disturbed that the youthful caller heard you
بَكَتwept عَينِيَmy eye اليُمنىthe right فَلَمّاbut when زَجَرتُهاI rebuked it
عَنِaway from الجَهلِfolly بَعدَafter الحِلمِself-restraint أَسبَلَتاthey both shed tears مَعاtogether
My right eye wept; but when I rebuked it
My right eye wept, but when I chided it
for folly after self-restraint, both shed tears together.
For ignorance after wisdom, both streamed together
وَأَذكُرُand I remember أَيّامَthe days of الحِمىthe protected pasture ثُمَّthen أَنثَنيI bend
عَلىover كَبِديmy liver مِنfrom خَشيَةٍfear أَنthat تَصَدَّعاit might split apart
And I remember the days of the protected pasture, then bend
And I recall the days of love, and then bend
over my liver, afraid that it might split apart.
My liver in fear that it will split in two
فَلَيسَتfor they are not عَشِيّاتُthe evenings of الحِمىthe protected pasture بِرَواجِعٍreturning
عَلَيكَto you وَلَكِنbut خَلِّlet عَينَيكَyour two eyes تَدمَعاthey both weep
For the evenings in the protected pasture will not return
The evenings of love are not to return
to you; but let your two eyes weep.
To you, but leave your eyes flowing with tears
