إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI lament فَقدَthe loss of لُبنىLubna كَماjust as شَكاlamented
إِلىto اللَهِGod فَقدَthe loss of الوالِدَينِboth parents يَتيمُan orphan
To God I lament the loss of Lubna, as did
To God I complain, as one who lost his loved ones complained to God,
an orphan, lamenting to God the loss of both parents:
An orphan whom his kin abandoned, so his body is frail,
يَتيمٌan orphan جَفاهُshunned him الأَقرَبونَthe closest kin فَجِسمُهُso his body
نَحيلٌemaciated وَعَهدُand the time with الوالِدَينِboth parents قَديمُlong past
an orphan shunned by his closest kin, whose body
And his parents' covenant is old.
is wasted, and whose days with his parents are long past.
Their home cried for their absence, so it shed tears,
بَكَتwept دارُهُمtheir dwelling مِنbecause of نَأيِهِمtheir being far away فَتَهَلَّلَتso flowed
دُموعِtears فَأَيُّthen which of الجازِعينَthe grief-stricken أَلومُshall I blame
Their dwelling wept at their absence, and there flowed
Which of the grievers should I blame?
tears; which of the grief-stricken shall I blame?
Am I someone tearful, crying of yearning and love,
أَمُستَعبِراًa tearful one? يَبكيweeps مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging وَالهَوىand passion
أَماor (apparently misdivided) خَرَanother (apparently misdivided) يَبكيweeps شَجوَهُhis sorrow وَيَهيمُand wanders distraught
A tearful man who weeps from longing and passion,
Or did I just happen to cry, complaining of his woe and madness?
or another who weeps his sorrow and wanders distraught?
The bonds of love for my loved ones confused me,
تَهَيَّضَنيbroke me anew مِنfrom حُبِّlove of لُبنىLubna عَلائِقٌbonds
وَأَصنافُand forms of حُبٍّlove هَولُهُنَّtheir terror عَظيمُimmense
Bonds of love for Lubna have broken me anew,
And kinds of mighty love overwhelmed them.
and forms of love whose terror is immense.
He whose heart clings to love of loved ones,
وَمَنand whoever يَتَعَلَّقclings to حُبَّlove of لُبنىLubna فُؤادُهُhis heart
يَمُتwill die أَوor يَعِشwill live ماas long as عاشَhe lives وَهوَwhile he is كَليمُwounded
And whoever's heart clings to love for Lubna
Will either die or live, living woefully.
will die, or live wounded for as long as he lives.
So even if I gathered patience from you,
فَإِنّيfor indeed I وَإِنeven though أَجمَعتُI have resolved عَنكِapart from you تَجَلُّداًto show fortitude
عَلىto العَهدِthe pledge فيماin what بَينَناis between us لَمُقيمُsurely steadfast
For I, though resolved to bear separation from you with fortitude,
To keep our pact, I remain steadfast.
surely remain true to the pledge between us.
And time has separated our group,
وَإِنَّand indeed زَماناa time شَتَّتَshattered الشَملَthe union بَينَناbetween us
وَبَينَكُمُand between you فيهِin it العِدىthe enemies لَمَشومُsurely ill-omened
And surely a time when our union was shattered
Between you and them, in it misfortune is ominous.
by enemies, dividing us from you, is ill-omened.
Is it true that your heart is empty,
أَفيis it in الحَقِّwhat is right هَذاthis أَنَّthat قَلبَكِyour heart فارِغٌempty of love
صَحيحٌsound وَقَلبيwhile my heart فيin هَواكِlove for you سَقيمُsick
Is this right—that your heart is empty of love,
Healthy, while my heart in love with you is sick?
and sound, while my heart is sick with love for you?
