أَقولُI say لِخُلَّتيto my beloved فيin غَيرِthe absence of جَرمٍwrongdoing
أَلاAh بِينيdepart بِنَفسيwith my life as ransom أَنتِyou بِينيdepart
I say to my beloved, though she has done no wrong:
I say to my beloved though she's done no wrong
“Ah, depart—my life for you—depart!
You're part of me, myself you're part of me
فَوَاللَهِfor, by God العَظيمِthe Almighty لَنَزعُsurely the tearing out of نَفسيmy soul
وَقَطعُand the severing of الرِجلِthe leg مِنّيfrom me وَاليَمينِand the right hand
For, by Almighty God, the tearing out of my soul
By God Almighty, I'll tear myself apart
and the severing of my leg and right hand
And cut my leg off, and my right hand
أَحَبُّdearer إِلَيَّto me ياO لُبنىLubna فُراقاًparting
فَبَكّيso weep لِلفُراقِfor the parting وَأَسعِدينيand join me in mourning
are dearer to me, O Lubna, than parting.
Dear Lubna, I love parting from you more
So weep for our parting, and join me in mourning.
So cry for parting, and make me happy
ظَلَمتُكِI wronged you بِالطَلاقِthrough divorce بِغَيرِwithout جُرمٍwrongdoing
فَقَدfor indeed أَذهَبتِyou have taken away آخِرَتيmy hereafter وَدينيand my faith
I wronged you by divorcing you for no offense,
I wronged you with divorce though you've done no wrong
for you have cost me my hereafter and my faith.”
You took away my final days and faith
رَحَلتُI journeyed إِلَيهِto him مِنfrom بَلَديmy homeland وَأَهليand my family
فَجازانيso he repaid me جَزاءَthe recompense of الخائِنيناthe traitors
I journeyed to him from my homeland and my family,
I traveled to you from my land and family
and he repaid me with the recompense of traitors.
Yet he rewarded me like traitors get
فَمَنso whoever رانيhas seen me فَلاthen let him not يَفتَرَّsmile بَعديafter me
بِحُلوِat the sweetness of القَولِspeech أَوuntil يَبلوhe probes الدَفيناwhat lies buried
So whoever has seen me, let him not smile after me
Whoever sees me, don't speak sweetly of me
at sweet words until he probes what lies buried.
Or mix perfumes to mask how I turned out
