فَهَيَّجَ أَشجانَ الفُؤادِ وَما يَدري
And a caller called while we were at al-Khayf in Mina,
And a caller called out while we were at al-Khayf in Mina,
stirring the heart’s sorrows, all unknowing.
So he stirred the heart’s sorrows, unaware.

He called another—not her—by the name of Layla, and it was as though
He called someone other than her by Layla’s name, as though
with “Layla” he had roused a bird that dwelt within my breast.
With Layla’s name he had stirred a bird that was in my breast.
