The company turned the camels back, then departed,

and severed the bond of union with you.

A far-reaching resolve led them to part,

so the beloved's nearness grew distant, and the beloved went far away.

Before their departure, I did not know they were parting,

until their staff flew apart in splinters.

    يا حَبَّ بِالعاتِبِ الَّذي عَتَبا

    Hind invents offenses, reproaching me;

how dear is the reproacher who reproached!

I swore: but for what I asserted—and I have not

told people lies about their glory—

though you have squandered what I preserved of the

affection, I would have offered a wondrous praise-poem.

I have spent my life and the length of yours; never

do we cease sending forth playful words.

Its steep ascent leads whoever seeks the

straight course, and its wild beasts howl in rabid fury.

Why did you not, when the milk-rich camels were in their teat-bands,

and, swollen with milk, they snapped the sinew-cords,

meet my wishes while counsel was still fresh,

as I followed the head and left the tail?

You acted foolishly beyond its true measure, and did not

bring about a change to warrant such speeches.

Praise be to God, Lord of the House, for

Duhayy had by evening been sorely stricken in defeat.

Their foremost rides the road's rough ground,

calling his paternal cousins, already in distress.

Their chief was left where the charge took place,

with a spearhead in him that you would take for a flame.

And Haram's two sons and Thabit were stripped

of their two cavalry forces; they had perished.

We visited them with the army in broad daylight,

driving a clamorous host onward to death.

The sons of Aws came as a cold rain-cloud,

which the wind milked as it advanced, milking it freely.

A towering host, like a torrent followed by

a lingering cloud's downpour, sent flowing over the heights.

Indeed, the sons of Aws, when there blazes the

war, are like fire devouring wood.

Indeed, the sons of Aws are a people who dealt true

blows, and made wound-tending and scars a custom.

So they drove at the head of their brothers' ram,

until they turned away and bolted in flight,

with every supple blade whose stroke cuts through,

keen-edged, sinking deep whenever you brandish it.

The sons of Aws said, out of their restraint,

'Pass on, and take no spoil belonging to them.'

    Their rearmost drove their foremost,

as a trader drives livestock brought to market.

When their chief called them to death,

their hosts surged toward them in bands.
