إِذاif قَبيلٌa tribe أَرادوناthey intended us harm بِمُؤذِيَةٍwith a harmful deed
فَبِالظَواهِرِthen in the outskirts أَهلُmen of النَجدَةِvalor البُهَمُthe dauntless warriors
If a tribe intends us harm,
When the evil wished to hurt us,
then in the outskirts are men of valor, dauntless warriors.
The generous people of Najd were enveloped in perplexity,
إِذاwhen الخَزارِجُthe Khazraj نادَتcalled out يَومَon a day of مَلحَمَةٍbattle
وَشَدَّتِand harnessed الكاهِنانِthe two Kahin clans الخَيلَthe horses وَاِعتَرَمواand they grew fierce
When the Khazraj called out on a day of battle,
When the Khazraj called out on the day of battle,
and the two Kahin clans harnessed their horses and grew fierce,
And the two priests prepared the horses and held fast,
تَدارَكواthey rescued الأَوسَthe Aws لَمّاwhen رَقَّgrew frail عَظمُهُمُtheir bones
حَتّىuntil تَلاقَتcame together بِهِthrough it الأَرحامُties of kinship وَالذِمَمُand covenants
they rescued the Aws when their bones had grown frail,
They came to the aid of Aus when their might crumbled,
until, through it, ties of kinship and covenant came together,
Until through them kindreds and protections were restored,
لَمّاwhen أَتَتcame مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of عَمروٍAmr مُلَملَمَةٌa massed host
بِهاby it تُهَدُّare leveled حُزونُrugged tracts الأَرضِof the earth وَالأَكَمُand hillocks
when a massed host came from Banu Amr,
When there came from Banu Amr a mixed group,
by which the earth's rugged ground and hillocks are leveled,
With it the valleys and hills of earth were demolished,
وَمِنand from بَنيthe sons of خَطمَةَKhatma الأَبطالِthe heroes قَدindeed عَلِمواthey know
لاnot يَهلَعونَthey panic إِذاwhen أَعداؤُهُمtheir enemies سَلِمواremain unharmed
and from Banu Khatma, the heroes whom they know well
And from Banu Khatma the heroes knew
not to panic when their enemies remain unscathed.
They would not panic when their enemies made peace,
جَزاهُمُmay He reward them اللَهُGod عَنّاon our behalf أَينَماwherever ذُكِرواthey are mentioned
لَدىamid المَكارِمِnoble deeds إِذwhen عُدَّتare counted بِهاamong them النِعَمُfavors
May God reward them on our behalf wherever they are mentioned,
May God reward them wherever they are mentioned,
among noble deeds, when favors are counted there.
In the presence of virtues when blessings are counted,
تَاللَهِby God نَكفُرُهُمwe shall not be ungrateful to them ماas long as أَورَقَتputs forth leaves عِضَةٌa thorn-tree
وَكانَand there remains بِالأَرضِon the earth مِنamong أَعلامُهاits mountains عَلَمُa mountain
By God, we shall not be ungrateful to them while a thorn-tree puts forth leaves,
By God we disavow them not as long as there is a sprouting twig
and on earth a mountain among its mountains still stands.
And a sign remains in the land from its symbols,
ساقواthey brought الرُهونَthe hostages وَآسوناand supported us بِأَنفُسِهِمwith their own selves
عِندَin times of الشَدائِدِhardship قَدindeed بَرّواthey kept faith وَقَدand indeed كَرُمواthey were generous
They brought the hostages and stood by us with their own lives;
They paid ransoms and protected us with their souls,
in hardship, they were indeed faithful and generous.
In times of hardship they were righteous and noble,
وَلَستُand I am not ناسِيَهُمforgetting them إِنif جاهِلٌan ignorant man خَطِلٌloose-tongued
خَناspoke foully وَماand not جَدَبواthey disparaged عِرضيmy honor وَماnor كَلَمواthey wounded
And I shall not forget them if an ignorant, loose-tongued man
And I will not forget them if an ignorant fool speaks ill
speaks foully; they have not disparaged my honor, nor wounded it.
And does not dampen my honor or address me.
