I shall surely direct my praise to someone other than Hudhayfah—

to the gallant of dusk and horseman of al-Ajraf.

One who never ceases to fell every sturdy she-camel,

well-fleshed, without seeking to exhaust his resources.

Spacious in dwelling and precinct, easy of approach,

    a refuge for every hunger-bound, food-seeking wanderer.

He strikes helmets of masterly workmanship

on the day of battle with every bright, gleaming sword.

If you meet the ʿAmiri's cavalry raiding,

you will not find them clutching their horses' manes.

And when a grave crisis arises among ʿAmir,

then he is their defender and is equal to the task.

They inflict losses and exact revenge for their blood-feuds,

and muster to provide hospitality for guests.

Every tall mare gallops bearing them amid terror,

outstripping fine steeds; so does each fleet, wide-striding stallion,

nimble of limb, powerful of frame,

    smooth-cheeked, with abundant flowing hair.

You found them on the day of battle as though they were

lions in Bishah or among Ruwaf's ghaf trees.
