You have indeed burdened yourself, O son of al-Ẓarib,

and forced them into a position that had grown difficult,

and saddled them with a crushing undertaking,

heavy with burden, when you drove them to strife,

by warring against Khuzāʿah, people of lofty honor,

and people of praise, and people of ancestral distinction.

They are the House's protectors, and they repel

all the Arabs from its sacred precincts.

They expelled Jurhum, and after them expelled

Kinānah by force, with white, keen swords,

and brown spears and sleek steeds,

upon which ride true, noble horsemen.

And they forced Asad to join

the clans of Ṭayy, and seized the spoils.

Khuzāʿah are my people; if I boast

of them, my ancestral stock and lineage are ennobled.

They are the head; the people who come after them

are the tail—and the head is not like the tail.

They support their client in times of drought,

and the sorrows of affliction are lifted from him.

So their neighbor is safe throughout his life,

through them, from being wronged or despoiled.

They answer the call in war for fear of lampoons,

and wear their enemies down through plunder.

And had you not been saved from their wiles

by a steed of sound joints and strong sinews,

you would have visited death; so do not be ungrateful

for your steed's favor, O son of al-Ẓarib.

So if they meet you, death will visit you,

or you will escape a second time by flight.
