وَأَقلَقَتها نَوى الأَزماعِ إِقلاقا
Su'ad departed, and at evening the heart was yearning.
Happiness appeared and the heart became longing
And the distance of the departing bands troubled her sorely.
And the intentions of time disturbed it with anxiety

And at parting from her a grief-stricken raven stirred,
A passionate grief for being apart from her was kindled
One that had long been cawing of the anguish of separation.
It had long been accustomed to the grief of separation

Her dwellings on the plain have become effaced,
Her dwellings in the land became desolate
Except for worn-out trenches, like tattoo marks on an eyelid.
Except for traces like the kohl of eyelids

The slave women brought massive herds of camels near,
The prettiest slave-girls were brought near
High-humped, with swinging upper forelegs—prized breeding camels.
Like the heaped up ashes, flexing thighs

How was a chameleon of a tandub tree allotted to her,
How did she allow herself to be possessed
One that never releases a stem without gripping another?
By a love that only held back to resist
