May God reward with good, on behalf of a disowned, banished man,

the men who sheltered him—the clan of ‘Amr ibn Khalid.

For they are not like one who raids a friend in his folly,

whose aim in raiding is to acquire provision-bags.

Keep to the courtyards of your homes, for I

have men in plenty besides you when my deeds in battle are tested.

Did you seek shelter until, once you were safe,

you traded rhymes like the calls of hoopoes?

    فَلا أَنا بِالمُغضي ولَا بِالمُساعِدِ

    Both Mazin clans bring false charges against us;

so I neither turn a blind eye nor lend support.

And ‘Amr has watched over me with its might,

and its sons, each an awe-inspiring, noble man:

Valiant warriors on the day of terror, whose gain is glory,

with mighty necks where their heads rest, and hairy forearms.

Those are my brothers and the greater part of my kin,

and their strength in numbers, and aid that never fails.
