Indeed, the heart has grown lovesick and enthralled.

Today the memory of Salma has wasted it, and it has relapsed.

It has suffered all it has suffered from remembering her,

After finding solace; now the heart is stolen away.

And after gray had appeared at the partings of his hair,

And youth and folly had left him and slipped away,

He remembered union with her, after she had been carried far

By the lands; and the heart became entangled.

So turn aside the soul's cares when they visit by night,

And bind your saddle on a six-toothed she-camel, willing to travel by night,

Sturdy and powerful, with strength held in reserve,

When the weak beast flags on the road or falters.

She traverses every tract of far-reaching extent,

And every waste with no resting-place for one who halts.

When the flat-topped hills donned the mirage and gleamed,

Like white mantles untouched by any stain,

She waded with us through its terrors, while the pale camels flagged,

And the young antelope had hidden there and entered its covert.

As though she, after her long, swift journey, were

A wary wild ass, all day driving lean, sturdy she-asses,

Or a solitary wild bull, dark-cheeked and striped,

On whom a night in Jumada poured a roaring downpour.

And he spent the night a guest of an arta bush, sheltering beside it,

Under a heavy cloud the wind had milked until it gushed,

Until, when dawn's light appeared, he was met at daybreak

By a practiced hunter urging on dusky hounds.

    تَخالُ أَكرُعَها بِالبيدِ مُرتَعَسا

    Then he darted away, and they darted like arrow-shafts together;

You would think their legs were all aquiver in the wastes.
