ألَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat الوَردَal-Ward عَرَّدَturned away in flight صَدرُهُhis chest
وَحادَand swerved عَنِaway from الدَعوىthe battle cry وَضَوءِand the gleam of البِوارِقِthe flashing swords
Did you not see how al-Ward turned his chest away,
Did you not see the rose bare its chest
And swerved from the battle cry and the gleam of flashing swords,
And deviate from pretense and the light of mirages
وَأَخرَجَنيand took me away مِنfrom فِتيَةٍyoung men لَمdid not أَرِدI wish لَهُمfor them
فِراقاًa parting وَهُمwhile they فيin مَأزِقٍa narrow battleground مُتَضايِقِconstricted
And carried me away from young men I had not wished
And it brought me out from youths I did not want to part from
To leave, while they were in a narrow, constricted battleground,
While they are in dire straits and distressed
وَقَضَّand bit down hard عَلىon فاسِthe mouthpiece of اللِجامِthe bridle وَعَزَّنيand overpowered me
علىin أمرهhis will إِذwhen رَدَّfought back أَهلُthe men of الحَقائِقِthe duties of honor
And bit hard on the bridle's mouthpiece and overpowered me
And it broke the reins of my self-control and empowered me
To have his way, when men of honor fought back?
Over its command when the people of truths refused
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him لَمّاwhen بَلَوتُI tested بَلاءَهُhis mettle
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِمَتعٍin enjoyment مِنof خَليلٍa close companion مُفارِقِsoon to part
So I said to him, when I had tested his mettle,
So I said to it when I suffered its tribulation
While I still enjoyed a companion soon to part:
And I am surely parting from a beloved friend
أُحَدِّثُI recount مَنwhomever لاقَيتُI met يَوماًone day بَلاءَهُhis deeds under trial
وَهُمand they يَحسِبونَthey think أَنَّنيthat I am غَيرُnot صادِقِtruthful
I recount his deeds to anyone I ever meet,
I will tell whoever I met who suffered its tribulation
Though they think I am not truthful.
And they think I am not truthful
