ولولا هوى العَزْراءَ لمْ تكُ ناقتي

ولولا هوى العَزْراءَ لمْ تكُ ناقتي

بِنَكْدٍ ولم أَشْربْ طِلاءً ولا خَمْرا

بِنَكْدٍ ولم أَشْربْ طِلاءً ولا خَمْرا

And but for love of al-ʿAzrāʾ, my she-camel would not have been

at Nakd, nor would I have drunk boiled-down grape juice or wine.

لقد حبَّبَتْ شَعْلا إِليَّ ولم أكنْ

لقد حبَّبَتْ شَعْلا إِليَّ ولم أكنْ

أُحِبُّ بها شَعْلا ولا النَّفَر الزُّعْرا

أُحِبُّ بها شَعْلا ولا النَّفَر الزُّعْرا

She has indeed made Shaʿl dear to me, though I had not

loved Shaʿl there, nor the sparse-haired band of men.
