بلِقاءِ حبيبٍ مضَى تحْلمُ

بلِقاءِ حبيبٍ مضَى تحْلمُ

أو ثراءٍ يدومُ به تنعَمُ

أو ثراءٍ يدومُ به تنعَمُ

You dream of meeting a beloved who has gone,

Dreaming of meeting a beloved who is gone,

or of lasting wealth through which you live in ease,

Or wealth that brings you comfort and joy,

أو صديقٍ قديمٍ بهِ تُلهمُ

أو صديقٍ قديمٍ بهِ تُلهمُ

أو أخٍ ناصرٍ دونهُ تُهزَمُ

أو أخٍ ناصرٍ دونهُ تُهزَمُ

or of an old friend by whom you are inspired,

Or an old friend who inspires you,

or of a supportive brother without whom you are defeated,

Or a supporting brother you can rely on,

أو صبيٍّ عصَى جبَروت الزما

أو صبيٍّ عصَى جبَروت الزما

نِ وفرّ إلى حيثُ لا يهرَمُ

نِ وفرّ إلى حيثُ لا يهرَمُ

or of a boy who defied the tyranny of time

Or a disobedient child who defied the tyranny of time

and fled to where he never grows old,

And escaped to where he will not weaken,

أو بلادٍ بها النّاسُ لا تظلِمُ

أو بلادٍ بها النّاسُ لا تظلِمُ

أو ترابٍ عليهِ العدَى جُثّمُ

أو ترابٍ عليهِ العدَى جُثّمُ

or of lands where the people do not oppress,

Or a country where people are not oppressed,

or of earth upon which enemies crouch.

Or soil where enemies cannot tread,

يافعًا شارخًا هرمًا تحلمُ

يافعًا شارخًا هرمًا تحلمُ

بلقاءٍ سُويعاتهُ تُختمُ

بلقاءٍ سُويعاتهُ تُختمُ

Young, in your prime, or aged, you dream

A young, vigorous, old man still dreaming

of a meeting whose brief hours come to an end.

Of a meeting whose time is coming to an end.

إن غدا واقعًا فاللقاءُ علىْ

إن غدا واقعًا فاللقاءُ علىْ

الأرضِ اللهُ مِنكَ بهِ أعلمُ

الأرضِ اللهُ مِنكَ بهِ أعلمُ

If it becomes real, then of the meeting on

If it happens tomorrow, the meeting is, by God,

earth, God knows more than you do.

Unknown to you whether on earth or in the heavens.

يقظًا نائمًا ناعسًا تحلمُ

يقظًا نائمًا ناعسًا تحلمُ

بلِقاءٍ إذا تمّ قدْ يُندِمُ

بلِقاءٍ إذا تمّ قدْ يُندِمُ

Awake, asleep, or drowsy, you dream

Awake, asleep, drowsy, still you dream

of a meeting that, if it happens, may bring regret,

Of a meeting which, if realized, may cause regret.

إنْ رأيتَ الّذي قد حلِمتَ بهِ

إنْ رأيتَ الّذي قد حلِمتَ بهِ

بلقاءِ جنَابكَ لا يحلمُ

بلقاءِ جنَابكَ لا يحلمُ

if you see that the one you had dreamed of

If you see those you have dreamed of,

does not dream of meeting your esteemed self.

At your meeting, they may not even dream of you.

جالسًا راجلًا راكبًا تحلمُ

جالسًا راجلًا راكبًا تحلمُ

بلقاءٍ بهِ رُبّما تَسقمُ

بلقاءٍ بهِ رُبّما تَسقمُ

Sitting, on foot, or riding, you dream

Sitting, walking, riding, you dream

of a meeting over which you may fall ill,

Of a meeting that may make you ill.

إنْ رأيتَ الّذينَ سقِمْتَ لأجْــ

إنْ رأيتَ الّذينَ سقِمْتَ لأجْــ

ـــلهِمُ لسَقامِكَ لمْ يسْقموا

ـــلهِمُ لسَقامِكَ لمْ يسْقموا

if you see that those you fell ill for

If you see those you were sick for,

did not fall ill over your illness.

They were not sick for your sickness.

كم حلِمتَ بمنْ بكَ لمْ يَحلُموا

كم حلِمتَ بمنْ بكَ لمْ يَحلُموا

كم ظُلِمتَ بمنْ بكَ لمْ يُظلَموا

كم ظُلِمتَ بمنْ بكَ لمْ يُظلَموا

How often you dreamed of those who did not dream of you!

How much you dreamed of those who never dreamed of you,

How often you were wronged by those who were not wronged by you!

How much you were wronged by those who never wronged you.

ما لحُلْمكَ يا غرّ مُسْتَبْعدٌ

ما لحُلْمكَ يا غرّ مُسْتَبْعدٌ

منهُ ربٌّ هو الأكرمُ الأرحمُ

منهُ ربٌّ هو الأكرمُ الأرحمُ

What ails your dream, naive one, that it excludes

What makes your far-fetched dream, o naive one,

a Lord who is the Most Generous, the Most Merciful?

Impossible for a Lord Most Generous and Merciful?

أ لبُعدِ لقاءٍ بهِ تجزمُ؟

أ لبُعدِ لقاءٍ بهِ تجزمُ؟

فالّلقاءُ وشيكٌ ولا تعلمُ

فالّلقاءُ وشيكٌ ولا تعلمُ

Is it because you are certain the meeting is far off?

Do you presume a meeting is too far?

For the meeting is near, and you do not know.

The meeting is near though you know not.

أم لطولِ بقاءٍ ومن فوقكَ

أم لطولِ بقاءٍ ومن فوقكَ

ذي المنايا تحومُ وتسْتَقْسِمُ

ذي المنايا تحومُ وتسْتَقْسِمُ

Or because of a long life, while above you

Or is it for a prolonged lifetime, and death

these deaths hover and cast lots?

Hovers over you, determining your fate?

أم لذنْبٍ عصيْتَ بهِ ربّكَ

أم لذنْبٍ عصيْتَ بهِ ربّكَ

فتجنبت حُلْما بهِ تَسلمُ

فتجنبت حُلْما بهِ تَسلمُ

Or because of a sin through which you disobeyed your Lord,

Or is it for a sin you disobeyed your Lord with,

and so avoided a dream through which you would find safety?

So you avoid dreaming of surrendering to Him?

أم لأنّ اللقاءَ بهِ يَعرِضُ

أم لأنّ اللقاءَ بهِ يَعرِضُ

دونَ ما عرضَ الخلْقُ أو قدّموا

دونَ ما عرضَ الخلْقُ أو قدّموا

Or because the meeting with Him offers

Or is it because the meeting exposes you

less than what created beings have offered or provided?

Unlike what people present or offer?

عجبًا للّذي يتجنّبُ ذكْــ

عجبًا للّذي يتجنّبُ ذكْــ

ــــرَ لقاءٍ بهِ عمرُهُ يُختمُ

ــــرَ لقاءٍ بهِ عمرُهُ يُختمُ

How strange is the one who avoids mention

How strange is one who avoids the memory

of a meeting through which his life comes to an end,

Of a meeting that will end his life span.

ناسيًا أممًا أصبحتْ قصصًا

ناسيًا أممًا أصبحتْ قصصًا

يسمعُ المرْءُ عنْها ولا يُصدمُ

يسمعُ المرْءُ عنْها ولا يُصدمُ

forgetting nations that have become stories;

Forgetting nations that became stories

one hears of them and is not shocked.

One merely hears without being moved.

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

ءٌ إذا أنت أحسنْتَ لا يُندمُ

ءٌ إذا أنت أحسنْتَ لا يُندمُ

Set the dream right, naive one: this is a meeting

Reform the dream, o naive one, this meeting,

that, if you do good, brings no regret.

If you do good, will not lead to regret,

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

ءٌ إذا أنت طهّرْتَ لا يُسقمُ

ءٌ إذا أنت طهّرْتَ لا يُسقمُ

Set the dream right, naive one: this is a meeting

Reform the dream, o naive one, this meeting,

that, if you purify yourself, brings no sickness.

If you purify, will not lead to illness.

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

ءٌ إذا أنت عمّرْتَ لا يَهدمُ

ءٌ إذا أنت عمّرْتَ لا يَهدمُ

that, if you build up, does not tear down.

If you build, will not lead to destruction.

قوّم الحلْمَ يا غِرُّ هذا لقا

ءٌ إذا أنت قصّرْتَ لا تُظلمُ

ءٌ إذا أنت قصّرْتَ لا تُظلمُ

at which, if you fall short, you will not be wronged.

If you are just, you will not be wronged.
