When life departs, and there remains

For you, of it, a lifetime without heartbeats,

Then your soul's death is announced to you, for you are no longer

Alive, but have become one of the dead.

Do not blame it then; reproach it

If you wish, and know that it is among the trustworthy.

Condemn a lifetime that never once strove within it,

Neither for its sake nor for those just after death.

Indeed, in some of life's span lie arrogance and vanity,

    Exalting itself above life's bounty.

Its belief about life is that life

Is subject to the days and years.

For it sees in life a shadow that lengthens, if

It lasts long, until it dissolves into the darkness.

Rather, it walks as it pleases, and slows

If it dawdles, and shortens its steps.

So it sleeps until, when it awakens,

It cries the cry of one lost in the wastelands:

Where is my soul, which holds my name and form,

And my traits, my habits, and my attributes?

Where has it gone from me? Without it I am

Nothing but a dream without nights,

And a stranger walking the earth as a phantom,

    Who sees, if he sees, none but the dead;

And a weight upon the palms of time,

Nothing has come from him but woes.

He knows no joy, just as he knows no

Sorrow, and there are no appetites within him.

He does not hunger unless worms hunger

Within him; they will leave nothing of him but mortal remains.

Without judgment or heart, he goes on

In the void, blind, without aims.

He awaits death, unaware that he is

Dead—his death was free of the throes of dying.

    ما نعاهُ حتّى نعاةُ النعاةِ

    Death does not know how he died, or where;

Not even the heralds of death's heralds announced his death.

No curse upon a life that was humiliated,

But upon a lifetime deluded by prayers,

And upon whoever, when death comes upon that lifetime,

Rises in ignorance to pray for its deliverance.
