O master, whom we loved above all humankind,

and O shoulder we followed rather than the stars.

We walked behind him, honoring his endeavor,

and never asked him where our journey would end.

He was obeyed among us the day we gained him,

and never, in all our days, did we disobey him.

O loveliest tale of all that we have told,

and O loveliest verses of all that we have composed.

You came like love, with life in its right hand,

and our wishes are but a trickle from its world.

You came like a dream, stirring in our breasts

an untamed ambition with which we restore a name we lost.

We lived you as love, forgetting that every

love departs, while its memory lives on.

We lived you as a dream, forgetting our wailing

on the morning after every dream we had seen.

    فزاد جمالاً بك حتى عبدناهُ

    You came as something beautiful and enchanting we had already loved;

so through you it grew more beautiful, until we worshipped it.

    وجدْتَ فعلّمت التنافس مغزاهُ

    And you went further, giving humility its meaning;

and you were generous, teaching competition its purpose.

Like love, you revive hearts that have withered

with the affliction of graying, after a lifetime we have folded away.

And you succeed in enticing a glory we had forgotten

to us—count how often, before you, we had hoped for it.

Then, heedlessly, we credit success to someone other than you,

and you are forgotten, like every sweet thing we have possessed.

We forgot you heedlessly, forgetting that every

love, if neglected for a day, is lost to us.

So you departed a king and vanquished your enemy,

and left in us a pain we had never known.

    فكم ظلّ منك كي يعودَ فنلقاهُ

    What has happened is too much for us, O lifetime;

how much of you remains for him to return and us to meet him?

And if God prolongs you, what of his return,

when, on both occasions he came, we wronged him?

And is there still enough in the eye to match his tears,

so that a love we wish we had never known might forgive?

Life goes at her own pace—what ails her? I think

we erase her with tomorrow's coming, and forget him.

Will she not slow her pace a little, so we may find comfort

in what remains of the fragrance of a love we have not forgotten?

Dear to us is every yesterday we have passed through,

and every tomorrow is yesterday once we have attained it.

But a yesterday that lavished love is one we cherish.

If only tomorrow would let yesterday take its place, so we might live it.

You are merciful to us, O Lord; none but we

would fill our cup with the bitterness we have drunk.

So a cup you bestowed on us for good—may you not prolong

it, if we have filled it with injustice we have known.
