O holder of authority, I would disobey no command of yours,

if you made me immortal or gave me more years,

and visited me, carrying in your right hand

the gardens of Eden, their wine flowing as a river,

and brought me what could avail against God

if I disobeyed and obeyed no command of His,

and did not glorify Him in secret or aloud,

and did not commune with Him in the heart of night or at noon.

O holder of authority, even if you gave me the world

and added twice as much, I would not accept it as a dowry

for a body that, if I were put to death, would become unrecognizable.

How abundant a bounty it is, if it be a grave!

What say you of her who, if she fears God, would be

a treasure for me on the day whoever lies in his grave is raised?

O my destroyer, this lesser life is destined to pass away,

whether you are granted two thousand years, or fifty, or an age,

until, when the latter blast is sounded,

you will reckon that all you lived is not worth even zero.

Look at what has gone by, and count what has passed:

for the span of what remained to us did not exceed a fingernail.

O holder of authority, who will protect us from Him

in this life, if He wills harm for me or you?

What will become of you, with the angels arrayed around us

at a gathering-place whose earth is spread out, dust-colored,

and the fire flings its sparks there, palace-sized,

and we find no shelter then apart from Him?

And God is above us—how great a Lord He is!

Woe to me at His judgment, if it brings no triumph!

I fear a hellfire stoked for a thousand years

after two thousand, until it was no longer red.

I fear, if I disobey Him, a fire

where I am made to drink boiling water and fed embers.

Indeed, we are bound for God; there is no god but He.

To Him I have turned in repentance, so I shall disobey no command of His.

I made it clear, and you chose this world when I gave you the choice.

You offered, and I chose the other life when you gave me the choice,

whose beauty, were it to tell of itself for an age,

would not fully convey a single secret among the mysteries of its beauty.

O my Lord, I have chosen to build up the grave

in this life; so build me a palace in Your presence.
