May God never set right the lot of a clique that gives birth

at every turn to a hireling whose lot is a country.

His command is followed in every farce,

and mayors gather at the mourning for his father.

Walls and gateways strut in his portrait,

and the gray-haired and the child glory in his name.

Established ways are cut away at the hour of his accession,

and vanish from the Book of their Lord, the Eternal Refuge.

But his devil refuses and protests:

Beware of claiming that you are the One.

So he avoids the folly of Pharaoh and those who came before,

and claims that he is supported by God.

He searches among the prophets, hoping to find

the name of the prophet whom the chain of transmission lost!

Then his sheikh ascends: “O country,

your companion has appeared, and the number is complete.”

flows; tyranny and flogging dwell within it.

His father’s double, he has, concerning all that comes

from the plundered homeland’s blessings, a creed:

    والنّصفُ نصفٌ لهُ ونِصفُ من فسَدوا

    Half goes to those who made a calf and bowed to it;

and the other half: half for him, and half for the corrupt.

And half the people are hirelings serving the wicked,

and the other half are like strangers when they arrive.

Under his rule, our market is a slave girl who has given

her beauty to humankind and to all that comes.

Under his rule, the body requires no space,

and intestines and stomachs make do with prayer.

    والميْتُ حيُّ الترابِ ليس ينتقدُ

    Under his rule, the living are dead and are not missed;

and the dead, alive in the dust, do not criticize.

A base man is made arbiter over the livelihoods of those who toil,

a ghoul to terrorize those who bowed to their Lord.

In his reckoning, the righteous man is a traitor, to be shunned,

and everyone who betrays is truthful and trusted.

May God never set right a clique that is the support

and reinforcement of that other in its manifest crime:

a female piper who gives, a she-devil who preaches,

a fabricator who describes, a liar who promises:

a sheikh, a ministerial appointee, a greedy merchant,

a thief, a female dancer, and idle youths.

    وإنْ تقاعسَ عنْها كلّهم قعَدوا

    If he rises on some business, they rise as though flogged;

and if he hangs back from it, they all sit down.

    فإن هوى نُثروا كأنّهُم عَضَدُ

    In his shadow, they are one another’s supporting arms;

but if he falls, they are scattered like lopped branches.

Every colonizer has his people and his community,

and tongues of fire against anyone whose concern is the country.

May God never set right the lot of youths who have heard—

if sleep lands a punch, they are stilled by it.
