Does a grandfather sleep in the open while his grandson

after him, revels in his bounty!

He is ignorant of him if he ever imagined his grandfather

a dried-up thing, without feeling or a beating heart.

Rather, he is alive; were his grandson to visit him,

he would see life clearly leaping forth.

And perhaps, if he looked into mirrors, he would see

what is plain to see: a yawning old fool.

Is this world called life, while the truth

mostly veils itself from us within it?!

Is the hereafter called annihilation, while the truth

itself stands ready behind the veil?

O dead one, who never has enough

of his death—how long will you drink from it?

How long will you shirk a duty you owe?

And truth is awake; there is no escape from it.

How long will you estrange yourself from her who does not betray,

and draw near to her whose blood is deceit?!

Do you endear yourself to her who kindles wars?

And turn away from her who spreads peace?!

Have you not felt the pulse in your chest run dry?

And its air seep away into open space?

Has not the dust of your trunk bent you toward the earth,

until you came to ride on three?

Its leaning is only the yearning of one returning,

longing for his origin—and every origin prevails.

Do you not make the earth your bed, without comfort,

whenever you feel that you are weary?

And it is as though your soul, when you stretch out upon it,

casts off a burden that steals away serenity.

You seek serenity! Who but your hereafter, O

worshipper of your worry, can bring serenity?!

No new thing in it enthralls you any longer,

and beauty in it is ascribed to the past.

You weep for the past like a brother who wept for a brother gone,

and live with it as though it never sets.

And you revolve in an orbit whose sun is your past,

and boast to the world that you are a planet!

And by it you make your way; without it you waver.

And it is right guidance; whatever lies beyond it is false.

    فبهِ النّجاحُ ودونهُ تتخيّبُ

    And whatever it dictates in words, you write down;

for through it comes success; without it you fail.

And ink in the hands of your past is counted eloquent,

while the eloquent speech of those beneath it is not.

And whoever favored his past became, to the mother

of his past, a son—and he is closer to her.

    O estranged, forsaken one, what

ails you? Whenever I draw nearer, you flee!

I am indeed the hereafter that you dread,

and I am she, the more enduring one you avoid.

Turn toward me, for I await

a deed by which you overcome this world.

For I am bliss to whoever comes to me, having overcome

his worldly life, believing in the One who cannot be overcome.

And I am misery to whoever comes to me compelled,

still longing for her whose end comes through me.
