Who will defend me against one who reproached me, while he holds

My reins, though I myself am forsaking him?

Indeed, by love, if I thought I would perish

If I had a rival for the one I love,

I would withhold my soul from love, so my longing might destroy me.

I loathed vile deeds in the one I love,

When he made sharing his love a habit.

So I kept my soul from being base,

And I said to it, "O soul, die nobly!"

For there is no good in love shared with a rival.
