رِياض الهَنا بِاليمن فاحَت وُرودها
فَطابَso became delightful لِأَربابfor the holders of الصُدورhigh rank ورودهاvisiting them
فَطابَ لِأَرباب الصُدور ورودها
The roses of joy's gardens breathe auspicious fragrance;
The gardens of bliss in Yemen have blossomed
so visiting them delights men of high station.
Its roses have delighted the hearts
وَحيّاand greeted دِمَشقDamascus الشامal-Sham صَوبa downpour مِنof الحَياrain
وَحيّا دِمَشق الشام صَوب مِن الحَيا
فَأَحياso revived رُسومsigns الخصبof fertility وَاِخضَرَّand grew green عودُهاits bough
فَأَحيا رُسوم الخصب وَاِخضَرَّ عودُها
A shower of rain greeted Damascus of al-Sham,
And Damascus, the jewel of Syria, has revived
reviving the signs of fertility, and its bough grew green.
When the breeze of bliss made its trees green again
وَصبَّحهاand greeted it at dawn صُبحthe dawn الهَناof joy فَتباشَرَتso rejoiced
وَصبَّحها صُبح الهَنا فَتباشَرَت
بَشائرglad tidings بشرof delight لَيسَnot يحصىcan be counted عَديدهاtheir number
بَشائر بشر لَيسَ يحصى عَديدها
Joy's dawn greeted it, and jubilantly came
The dawn of bliss has brightened it
glad tidings of delight, too numerous to count.
With tidings of joy beyond counting
وَفيand in طالعthe rising الأَفراحof rejoicing مِنfrom أُفقthe horizon الهَناof joy
وَفي طالع الأَفراح مِن أُفق الهَنا
بَداappeared بَدرُthe full moon of آفاقthe horizons of العُلىeminence وَسَعيدهاand their blessed one
بَدا بَدرُ آفاق العُلى وَسَعيدها
And as rejoicing rose from joy's horizon,
And at the rising of joys on the horizon of bliss
there appeared the full moon of glory's horizons, their blessed one.
The full moon of sublime realms appeared radiant
قدومan arrival بَداappeared بِالخَيرwith goodness ياO خَيرbest of قادمnewcomers
قدوم بَدا بِالخَير يا خَير قادم
إِلىto بَلَدٍa land يَسموsurpasses لَبيداًLabid بَليدهاits dullard
إِلى بَلَدٍ يَسمو لَبيداً بَليدها
An arrival dawning with goodness, O best of newcomers,
An arrival bearing goodness, O the best arrival
to a land whose dullard surpasses Labid.
To a country exalted, though long dormant
فَياso O بَحرsea of علمlearning وافرabundant كاملperfect in الحجاintellect
فَيا بَحر علم وافر كامل الحجا
بَسيطlavish in نَدىthe bounty الأَيديof hands سَريعswift in مديدهاtheir outstretching
بَسيط نَدى الأَيدي سَريع مديدها
O sea of abundant learning, perfect in intellect,
O ocean of abundant and perfect knowledge
lavish in your hands' bounty, swift to extend them.
With hands pouring clear dew rapidly
هِيَit is الراحةcomfort المَبسوطةoutstretched الراحةthe palm الَّتيwhich
هِيَ الراحة المَبسوطة الراحة الَّتي
يُجيدmakes splendid العَطاياgifts جودهاits bounty وَوُجودهاand its very being
يُجيد العَطايا جودها وَوُجودها
It is comfort, open-palmed, whose
It is the outspread comfort, the comfort where
bounty and very being make gifts splendid.
Bounties and existence excel each other
لَكَfor you اللَهGod مِنwhat a مَولىًlord بِهِthrough him قَدindeed سَمَتhave risen ذرىthe heights of
لَكَ اللَه مِن مَولىً بِهِ قَد سَمَت ذرى
سَماthe heaven of الرُتبةrank العلياthe highest وَضاءَتand shone سُعودهاits auspicious stars
سَما الرُتبة العليا وَضاءَت سُعودها
God be with you! What a lord, through whom rose the heights
God has appointed you a Master, by whom
of highest rank's heaven, and its auspicious stars shone.
The highest rank has reached its zenith, its glory manifested
لعلياكto your eminence تعزىare ascribed المكرُماتnoble deeds لِأَنَّهاbecause they
لعلياك تعزى المكرُمات لِأَنَّها
تحلّىis adorned بدرٍّwith pearls مِنfrom سَجاياكyour character جيدهاtheir neck
تحلّى بدرٍّ مِن سَجاياك جيدها
Noble deeds are ascribed to your eminence, for
Your glories are attributed, for you
their neck is adorned with pearls of your character.
Are adorned by a full moon of your features
فَإِنso if عُدَّare counted أَهلthe people of المَجدglory كُنتyou are عِمادهاtheir pillar
فَإِن عُدَّ أَهل المَجد كُنت عِمادها
وَإِنand if عُدَّare counted أَهلthe people of الفَضلexcellence أَنتَyou عَميدهاtheir chief
وَإِن عُدَّ أَهل الفَضل أَنتَ عَميدها
So if men of glory are counted, you are their pillar;
If the people of glory are counted, you are its pillar
and if men of excellence are counted, you are their chief.
And if the people of merit are counted, you are its chief
فَياso O قادِماًnewcomer حازَتgained بِهِthrough him الناسthe people نعمةًa blessing
فَيا قادِماً حازَت بِهِ الناس نعمةً
مِنfrom اللَهGod قَدindeed عَمَّhas encompassed الأَنامall mankind مَزيدهاits abundance
مِن اللَه قَد عَمَّ الأَنام مَزيدها
O newcomer, through whom the people gained a blessing
O you who came and people gained through you
from God, its abundance embracing all mankind.
A blessing from God that increased all people
حِماكyour protected domain حَماكmay He protect you اللَهGod قَدindeed أَمَّhas sought ناشِراًunfurling
حِماك حَماك اللَه قَد أَمَّ ناشِراً
لِواءthe banner of التَهانيcongratulations مُخلصa sincere man يَستجيدهاchoosing their finest
لِواء التَهاني مُخلص يَستجيدها
Your protected domain—God protect you!—has been sought by one unfurling
May God protect you, having raised
the banner of congratulations, a sincere man choosing their finest,
The banner of congratulations and promptly hoisted
بِعامfor a year جَديدnew فيهِin which قَدindeed قَدمhas arrived الهَناjoy
بِعام جَديد فيهِ قَد قَدم الهَنا
وَفيهِand in it يغاثare relieved الناسthe people مِمّاfrom what يؤودهاburdens them
وَفيهِ يغاث الناس مِمّا يؤودها
for a new year in which joy has arrived,
In a new year in which bliss has arrived
and in which people are relieved of what weighs them down.
And through which people find relief from distress
إذاwhen هبَّblows معطارfragrant الصباthe east wind مِنfrom ربىthe heights of الصَفاal-Safa
إذا هبَّ معطار الصبا مِن ربى الصَفا
نَحرناwe slaughter لَهاfor it ماwhat سنَّprescribed قِدماًlong ago لبيدهاits Labid
نَحرنا لَها ما سنَّ قِدماً لبيدها
When the fragrant east wind blows from the heights of al-Safa,
When the gentle breeze blows from the hill of purity
we slaughter for it what its Labid prescribed of old.
We shall offer it what would please its hospitality
فَتذكرناthen we remember عَهدthe days of الحِجازthe Hijaz وَلمand had not تَكُنbeen
فَتذكرنا عَهد الحِجاز وَلم تَكُن
لِطولdespite the length of المَدىtime تنسىforgotten لَديناamong us عُهودهاits bygone days
لِطول المَدى تنسى لَدينا عُهودها
Then we remember the days of the Hijaz; never have
It reminded us of the covenant with Hejaz, which
its bygone days been forgotten among us, despite the passage of time.
Despite the distances, we never forgot its bond
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَقومare surely a people خصّناsingled us out اللَهGod منّةًas a grace
وَإِنّا لَقوم خصّنا اللَه منّةً
بِأَشرَفwith the noblest ذاتbeing فيamong الوَرىcreation عمَّencompassed all جودُهاits bounty
بِأَشرَف ذات في الوَرى عمَّ جودُها
And we are indeed a people whom God has favored in His grace
We are the people God has specially favoured
with the noblest being in creation, whose bounty embraces all.
With the noblest being in existence, abundant its bounty
لَناours is كَعبةthe Kaaba of الفَضلexcellence التيwhich عصبةthe fellowship of الهدىguidance
لَنا كَعبة الفَضل التي عصبة الهدى
بِهاthere حرماًa sanctuary أَمناًsafety تؤمّseek وفودهاits delegations
بِها حرماً أَمناً تؤمّ وفودها
Ours is the Kaaba of excellence, which the guided fellowship's
We have the Kaaba of nobility, the sanctuary of guidance
delegations seek as a safe sanctuary.
To which pilgrims travel safely, in crowds
عَسىmay it be إِنif سَعىsets forth ذاthis العامyear ركبthe caravan of حجيجهاits pilgrims
عَسى إِن سَعى ذا العام ركب حجيجها
سَعىsets forth منكfrom you مقدامُthe dauntless leader of الجُنودthe troops وحيدُهاtheir peerless one
سَعى منك مقدامُ الجُنود وحيدُها
May it be, if its pilgrim caravan sets forth this year,
May the rider of its pilgrims, the unique
that you set forth, the troops' dauntless, peerless leader,
Commander of armies, the brave lion lead them this year
أَميرan emir لَهاfor it تَسريjourney by night السراةُthe nobles بِأَمرهat his command
أَمير لَها تَسري السراةُ بِأَمره
وَقَدand indeed زَأرتhave roared فَوقatop الجِيادthe steeds أسودُهاtheir lions
وَقَد زَأرت فَوق الجِياد أسودُها
their emir, at whose command the nobles journey by night,
A prince who by his command the noblemen travel
while their lions roar atop their steeds.
As its stallions roared, its lions crouched
فَيَرعىand he safeguards بِهاthere حَقّthe right of الرَعيّةthe subjects باسِطاًextending
فَيَرعى بِها حَقّ الرَعيّة باسِطاً
أَكُفَّpalms of نَدىًbounty بِالغَيظin rage باتَspent the night حسودهاtheir envier
أَكُفَّ نَدىً بِالغَيظ باتَ حسودها
There he safeguards his subjects' rights, extending
To tend to the rights of people openly
palms of bounty, their envier spending the night in rage.
With hands pouring clarity, while its envious slept
وَلاand may not زالَcease بِالرَأيwith judgment السَديدsound يسوسُهاgoverning them
وَلا زالَ بِالرَأي السَديد يسوسُها
وَبِالحَزمand with firmness وَالعَزمand resolve الشَديدstrong يَسودُهاhe rules them
وَبِالحَزم وَالعَزم الشَديد يَسودُها
And may he never cease to govern them with sound judgment,
And continued to govern it with upright opinion
and with firmness and strong resolve rule them,
And strong resolute determination to rule it
إِلىuntil أَنthat يُحلّيَadorns جيدthe neck of آمالهاtheir hopes الهَناjoy
إِلى أَن يُحلّيَ جيد آمالها الهَنا
بِنَيلthrough attaining المُنىwishes وَالعودُand the return بِالأَمنِin safety عيدُهاtheir festival
بِنَيل المُنى وَالعودُ بِالأَمنِ عيدُها
until joy adorns the neck of their hopes
Until the neck of its hopes wears the collar of bliss
with wishes fulfilled, and safe return becomes their festival.
And safety returns in peace to celebrate its feast
وَتنشدهاand you recite it عِندَupon الوُرودarrival إِلىto الحمىthe protected domain
وَتنشدها عِندَ الوُرود إِلى الحمى
رِياضgardens الهَناof joy باليمنwith good fortune فاحَتbreathed fragrance ورودُهاtheir roses
رِياض الهَنا باليمن فاحَت ورودُها
And you recite this upon arriving at the protected domain:
And when returning to the sanctuary, it recites near the roses
The roses of joy's gardens breathe auspicious fragrance.
The gardens of bliss in Yemen have blossomed again
