أَفدي الَّذي إِذ سَأَلت عَنهُ
رَناgazed وَسهمand the arrow اللحاظglances راشاfeathered
رَنا وَسهم اللحاظ راشا
I would ransom the one who, when I asked about him,
The one I ransom when asked of him
Gazed and feathered the arrow of his glances;
Whose glance is tender and voice so fair
وَثَغرهand his mouth باِسمهِwith his name يحاجيposes a riddle
وَثَغره باِسمهِ يحاجي
ماwhat مثلlike قَوليmy words شَفاhealed; quenched عطاشاthirsty people
ما مثل قَولي شَفا عطاشا
And his mouth poses a riddle with his name:
With lips that speak his beautiful name
“What, like my words, has quenched the thirsty?”
No words like mine can heal or compare
