I say to the Sea of the Romans, as it surged, overflowing,

in the court of the Arabs’ sea, the sun of the eminent:

Be gentle! Bitter salt water is not like

sweet, fresh water, easy to drink at the watering places.

And you, the encircling ocean, and the other seas

are nothing but rivulets beside this sea.

Abu Amr’s branches of knowledge are gifts from the Creator,

and no worthy man’s merit surpasses them in glory.

And no gardens, grown lush and full of beauty,

have a sweeter fragrance than the perfume of those virtues.
