عَلقته رَشأ كَاللَيث ذا لبد
أَخنىlaid low عَلَيهِupon him الَّذيthat which أَخنىlaid low عَلىupon لبدِLubad
أَخنى عَلَيهِ الَّذي أَخنى عَلى لبدِ
I loved him, a young gazelle like a lion with a mane.
His murky fangs, like a lion’s, were bared,
What laid Lubad low has laid him low.
and the one who wept was he who made others weep.
فَصارَso he became فيin حالَةa state يُرثىpity is felt لَهاfor it أَسَفاًin sorrow
فَصارَ في حالَة يُرثى لَها أَسَفاً
وَطالَماand for so long كانَhe was لاnot يرثيshowing pity إِلىto أَحَدِanyone
وَطالَما كانَ لا يرثي إِلى أَحَدِ
So he came to be in a state deserving sorrowful pity,
Now he is in a pitiful state, worthy of lamentation,
Though for so long he had shown pity to no one.
though long he lamented no one.
