وَكَفىand sufficed الحالthe condition سائِليmy questioner عَنin place of جَوابيmy answer
Friend, love's waywardness has stirred anguish within me.
The passion's confidant has stirred my love
And my state is answer enough for whoever questions me.
That's enough, don't ask anymore about my response
كَمhow many هِزبرa lion عَصيتُI defied إِذwhen بِتُّI spent the night صابيyearning in love
وَغَزالٍand a gazelle أَطَعتI obeyed فيهِfor his sake التَصابيyouthful dalliance
How many a lion I defied when I spent the night lovesick,
How many reproaches have I disobeyed, when I was chaste
and many a gazelle for whom I yielded to youthful dalliance!
And gazelles I obeyed, in them my desire
وَغَريميand my adversary بِالحُبّin love فيهِfor him غَراميmy passion
أَغيدٌa supple youth لَوif نارthe fire العَواذلthe reproachers مَسَّتtouched
And my adversary in love is the object of my passion.
My beloved, with love I have fallen for him
A supple youth—were the reproachers' fire to touch
Quiet, even if the fire of passion touched him
فيin هَواهlove for him مَسامِعيmy ears ماnot أَحسَّتfelt
ثَغرهhis mouth حاجَتيmy need لَهfor it حينَwhen مَسَّتpressed
my ears in my love for him, they would not feel it.
In his love, my hearing hasn't sensed
His mouth is what I crave when need for it grows urgent.
His mouth, my need for it when it touched
حاجِباهhis two eyebrows بِأَسهُمwith arrows اللَحظthe gaze أَمسَتbecame
عَنaway from مَراميmy aim مِنof الرِضابsaliva مَراميtargets
His brows, for the arrows of the gaze, became
His eyebrows, with the arrows of his glances armed
targets apart from my goal: the nectar of his mouth.
Against my purpose, the slaps made me deviate
كُلَّماwhenever مَرَّhe passed ليto me حلتgrew sweet مِنهُof him حالٌan aspect
وَبَداand became clear ليto me أَنَّthat السُلوَّforgetting love محالٌimpossible
Whenever he passed me, some aspect of him grew sweet to me,
Whenever he passed by me, a state descended upon me
and I saw that forgetting him was impossible.
And it seemed to me the greeting is impossible
ثُمَّthen لَمّاwhen مِنهُfrom him تَجلّىwas revealed جَمالٌbeauty
لاحَappeared فيon خدِّهِhis cheek لِعَينيّto my eyes خالٌa mole
Then, when his beauty revealed itself,
Then when his beauty manifested itself to me
a mole appeared on his cheek before my eyes,
A mole appeared on his cheek to my eyes
وَهوَand he بَدرٌa full moon بَداappeared بِلَيلon the night of التَمامِfullness
بِأَبيmy father as ransom خالهhis mole الذكيُّpotent شَذاهُits fragrance
and he was a full moon risen on the night of its fullness.
He is a full moon that appeared in the darkness of perfection
My father be a ransom for his mole, with its heady fragrance!
By my father, his cheek, the most intelligent, its remedy
جرحُthe wound قَلبيmy heart بِهِthrough it يَنالُobtains شِفاهُits healing
أَسوَدblack فَوقَupon أَبيضwhite قدindeed جَلاهُrevealed it
My heart's wound finds its healing through it.
The wound of my heart by it gets its healing
Black upon white, which has brought it into view,
Black above white, it has polished him
قُلتI said لمّاwhen اِنجَلىbecame clear لِعَينيto my eye سَناهُits radiance
حملcarried البَدرthe full moon قِطعَةًa fragment مِنof ظَلامِdarkness
I said, when its radiance shone before my eye:
I said, when his brilliance shone to my eyes, his tooth
"The full moon has borne a fragment of darkness."
The full moon carries a piece of darkness
كَمhow many حَسودٍan envious man عَلَيهِover him فيin الحُبّlove لاماreproached
حينَwhen خَطّtraced الجَمالbeauty فيon الخَدِّthe cheek لاماthe letter lām
How many an envious man reproached me for loving him,
How many envious people blame him for love
when beauty traced the letter lām upon his cheek!
When he etched beauty on the cheek, blame
قلّdwindled صَبريmy patience فَحينَfor when زِدتُI increased هياماin infatuation
كَثرgrew numerous الهائِمونthe infatuated lovers فيهِwith him غَراماin passion
My patience dwindled, for when my infatuation grew,
My patience lessened so when I became more enamored
those passionately infatuated with him grew more numerous,
Those who loved him increased, enamored
وَقَليلand few مَنthose who لَمnot يَكُنwere ذاpossessed of هيامِlovesickness
وَيحpity قَلبthe heart الشَجيِّthe grief-stricken lover فيهِfor him وَتَبّاand damnation
and few were those untouched by lovesickness.
And few have not fallen in love with him
Pity the heart of one grieving for him, and damnation
Oh heart of the lover, woe to you
لخليّto a carefree man خَلاwas free مِنof الوَجدpassionate longing قَلباin heart
وَلَماهand his lips' dark hue الشَهيُّluscious قَدindeed طابَbecame sweet شرباًto drink
to the carefree man whose heart is free of longing!
To the bosom friend, he has a heart empty of passion’s anguish
And his luscious dark lips have proved sweet to drink from,
The amorous one has found his drink pleasant
إِذwhen غَداbecame منهلاًa watering place لَدىat الوِردِcoming to drink عَذباsweet
وَهوَand it فيماin what حَكواthey related كَثيرmuch الزحامِcrowding
having become a sweet watering place when one comes to drink,
When he has become a fountain at the roses, fresh
and, as they relate, it is much thronged.
And he according to what they say is very crowded
ياoh لثَغرwhat a mouth لهfor it اللآلئُpearls كنهessence
عَنهُof it ياO برقlightning قَدindeed حَكيتَyou portrayed فَكُنهُso become it
Oh, what a mouth, whose very essence is pearls!
What lips whose pearls are its depths
You have portrayed it, O lightning—so become it!
About it, oh lightning, you have told its essence
هُوَit غَيثrain الظَماthirst كَماas قيلَwas said عَنهُof it
غَيرexcept أَنيthat I ظَمئتgrew thirsty بالوِردِon coming to drink مِنهُfrom it
It is rain to quench thirst, as has been said of it,
It is rain for the thirsty as was said about it
yet I grew thirsty on coming to drink from it,
Except that I thirsted for the roses from it
وَلَقَدand indeed زادَincreased فيهِin it حرُّthe heat أُواميmy burning thirst
كَيفَhow أُصلىam I made to burn بِالصَدّby rejection مِنهُfrom him جَحيماhellfire
and indeed the heat of my burning thirst increased there.
And indeed its heat has increased my worries
How can his rejection make me burn in hellfire
How do I pray against its repression, heatedly
وَأَرىand I see الخدّthe cheek جَنَّةًa paradise وَنَعيماand bliss
نبئيmy tale فيin هَواهlove for him أَضحىbecame عَظيماmomentous
while I see his cheek as paradise and bliss?
And I see the cheek as paradise and bliss
The tale of my love for him has become momentous,
Tell me in his love he has become great
وَغَداand became السهدsleeplessness فيin جُفونيmy eyelids مُقيماresident
حينماwhen جدَّgrew intent بِالرَحيلon departure مَناميmy sleep
and sleeplessness has taken up residence in my eyelids,
And sadness in my eyelids has become resident
when my sleep grew intent on departing.
When he was firm to bid farewell, my sleep
مَنwho مُجيرprotector of الضَعيفthe weak ياO أَهلpeople of ودّيmy affection
مِنfrom قَويٍّa strong one عَلَيهِagainst him رامsought التَعدّيwrongdoing
Who will shelter the weak one, O my dear friends,
Who will protect the weak, oh people of my affection
from a strong one who sought to do him wrong?
Against the powerful who wanted to transgress upon him
كُلَّماwhenever رُمتI sought قُربهhis nearness رامَhe sought بعديmy remoteness
وَإِذاand if دامَcontinued هَكَذاlike this فيهِfor him وَجديmy longing
Whenever I sought his nearness, he sought to keep me far away;
Whenever I wanted to get near him, he wanted distance
and if my longing for him continues like this,
And if this anguish of mine in him continues like this
فَعَلىthen to النَومsleep ياO جُفونeyelids سَلاميmy farewell
then, O eyelids, I bid sleep farewell.
Then my greetings to sleep, oh eyelids
