Did he greet the boon companions with wine's sun, drinking at dawn,
The repentant were revived by the rising sun,
That full moon of bliss—or freely offer his honeyed, dusky lips?
Was it the full moon of delight or the sweet honeyed wine that healed them?

And did that fawn go round, hurrying with a cup of wine,
That slender form went around offering cups generously,
Or go merrily, his own neck making others turn?
Or did the neck curve to sip the wine gracefully?

And did his face spend the night brightening a goblet for us
His radiant face shone on us last night like a goblet,
Of the finest wine—or did he strike passion's fire-stick?
Filled with limpid wine or a candle lit with desire.

The wine mixed with water of life was dark, but if mixed,
With saliva, a morning sun would have shone in the cup's star.
With darkness, it would shine like a star in the goblet at dawn.

Our goblets would almost have flown with it for joy.
Our goblets would have flown away in joy.

A moon passes it round among men of understanding;
The moon circulates them among the chaste lords,
Had the full moon of darkness tried to resemble him, it would have been shamed.
If the shameless full moon tried to mimic it, he would be exposed.

When the locks of night fall,
He shows you the dawn of bliss shining clear from his face.
I see you at dawn, your face glowing.

He smiles, revealing bubbles in a mouth with cool, lustrous teeth;
A dimpled smile reveals a beloved with a moustache,
Had lightning beheld his front teeth, it would not have flashed.
If lightning flashed from it, the hiding places would not see it.

And he rose, strutting proudly with his slender figure;
Amazed, a tall stature sways,
Had they weighed him against al-Liwa's ban trees, he would outweigh them.
If the bent branches competed, they would lose.

And he swayed his quivering, spear-like stature, using it to bar
A swaying form of a honey-seller wards him off,
A sip of his honeyed sweetness, in earnest or in jest.
Lest he greedily snatches his sweet honey.

And all night he sharpened the dark blade of his eyelids;
With sleepy eyes, many were killed, and much blood spilt,
How much blood of the slain he spilled, how much he shed!
By the one whose eyelids are swords.

Who will lend me tender words and a lance,
May love curse whoever censures the devotees of passion.
To gently pierce the hearts of lovers?

Then many glances have willfully wounded.

These wounds are retribution, and love the judge,
And in retribution lies life for the offender.
And in retribution is life for the aggressor.

I have exposed myself to tribulation willingly.

And a lover's eye that has aspired to nothing but sleeplessness.
And a pouring eye, not by choice looking up.

The bird of anxiety has been slaughtered in my eyelids.

If your phantom inclined toward me in the wing of night?
If only your phantom would carry me on wings.

Surely he would be content with what pleases you.

Abandoning the pact of love and its reins discarded.

Muhammad was rightly named the reformer,
Through the names of two prophets, each wafting his fragrance.
Two prophets named, in both names a sweet scent blows.

Until he wore the perfection and mantle of virtue.

The horizons say to me, dawn and wake!

With their light he erased the darkness of shameful ignorance.
And many doors of injustice and gloom were barred.

With justice he rewards the transgressors with the sword of deterrence.

On the day of battle without bringing ease to its breast.

On the morning a millstone turns in the hands of terrors.

فَتيقة النَشر بِالبشر الَّذي سَنَحا
So may the fragrant breezes of good fortune never wane,
The relief for mankind bloomed beautifully.
Their perfume spreading with the gladness that has appeared.
Our advisor’s determination never waned,

Our marshal, may you ever remain a man of high resolves
His ambitions transcending the heavens, an ocean of wisdom overflowing.
That rise above al-Simak, and of forbearance whose sea overflows.
If you aid God, He will aid you, and he whose state,

بِالنَصر دَولته العليا فَقَد نَجَحا
If you aid God, He will aid you; and whoever has had
Joined victory, has surely succeeded.
His exalted rule joined to victory has indeed succeeded.
O pillar of wisdom and patron for whom,

لَدَيهِ ألسن حَمدي تنظمُ المدحا
O lover of forbearance, lord before whom have been loosed
Tongues of praise unleash poems eulogizing.
The tongues of my praise, weaving encomiums,
To you flows poetry’s finest,
إِلَيكهاhere she is for you مِنof بَديعwondrous النظمverse جاريةa maiden

رقّت فَراقَت فَجاءَت تَنثَني مَرَحا
Here she is for you, a maiden of exquisite verse,
Softly marching to bend and sway playfully.
Delicate and delightful, arriving with a merry sway.
My friend heaped prolific praise on me with it,

She sought a noble man's prolonged praise; from me he
Suggesting the meter for my exalted ode.
Had requested her in al-Basit for his exalted rank.
Can tongues that fall short praising and singing his glory,
وَهَلand can تَفيdo justice بِعُلاهto his greatness ألسنtongues قصرتfell short

عَن مَدحه وَثَناه أعجز الفصحا
And can tongues do justice to his greatness when they fall short
Match his sublime merits, the most eloquent perplexed?
Of praising him, and his praise has baffled the eloquent?
He remains the holy shrine of our hopes,
لاmay not زالcease to be كَعبةthe Kaaba آمالof hopes لَناfor us حَرَماًa sanctuary
لا زال كَعبة آمال لَنا حَرَماً

أَمناً يَطوف بِها الراجي وَلا بَرحا
May he ever remain our hopes' Kaaba, a sanctuary
A secure refuge, with the hopeful one circling, not moving away.
Of safety, which the hopeful circles—may he never cease to be so.
The breezes of generosity never shook a branch of honor,

مَجد عَلَيهِ حَمام الشكر قَد صَدحا
As long as breezes of excellence sway a bough on the heights
Without the pigeons of gratitude cooing on it.
Of glory, where the doves of gratitude have sung,
Or did a pleasant time pass without him singing to us,
أَوor ماas long as صَفاwas serene وَقتthe time أنسيof Unsi وَهوَwhile he يُنشدناrecites to us

Or as long as Unsi's hours are serene, as he recites to us:
The repentant were revived by the rising sun.
“Did he greet the boon companions with wine's sun, drinking at dawn?”
