    By the sight of your radiant, inviolate face,

    Be gentle with me—may I be your ransom, O my eyes.

    So, O moon shining from the brow,

    Your image lies between the folds of my eyelids,

    And remembrance of you stays with me in motion and stillness.

    How long this turning away? You have prolonged your desertion of me.

    مَتى يَوماً أَراكَ يَهون أَمري

    Gently—for chaste love is my excuse.

    On a day when I see you, my plight grows lighter;

    And on a day I do not see you, my chest tightens.

    And the women who reproach me excuse me for my madness.

    I swear indeed by the radiant stars,

    By your neck and the crescent of the bracelet,

    وصالك جَنَّتي وَجفاكَ ناري

    And by the wondrous coquetry of your Dhu al-Fiqar glance:

    Union with you is my paradise, and your coldness my fire;

    And your face is my direction of prayer, and your approval my religion.

    My soul for you, O twin of the bough in stature!

    Why have you permitted the deliberate killing of the lovesick lover?

    And O son of Nu'man's anemones in cheek,

    Blessed is the one who clothed your cheeks in roses,

    And crowned him with a crown of jasmine.
