تَنَبَّه لِلخَليل وَلَو جَليلاً

تَنَبَّه لِلخَليل وَلَو جَليلاً

وَخُذ حذراً وَكُن فَطناً نَبيلا

وَخُذ حذراً وَكُن فَطناً نَبيلا

Be wary of a close friend, even if he is eminent.

Be wary of a friend, though he be dear

And take care, and be discerning and noble.

And take precaution, be intelligent and noble

أَلَم تَسمَع أَبرّ النصح قيلاً

أَلَم تَسمَع أَبرّ النصح قيلاً

إِذا ما كُنت مُتَّخذاً خَليلا

إِذا ما كُنت مُتَّخذاً خَليلا

Have you not heard the sincerest counsel spoken:

Have you not heard the best advice spoken

If ever you choose a close friend,

That when you have made someone a friend

فَلا تَأمَن خَليلك أَن يَخونا

فَلا تَأمَن خَليلك أَن يَخونا

بَنو الأَيّام أَكثرهم خؤونٌ

بَنو الأَيّام أَكثرهم خؤونٌ

Then do not assume your friend will not betray you.

Do not trust your friend that he will not betray

The sons of the days—most of them are treacherous.

The sons of time are mostly treacherous

وَلَيسَ لَدَيهمُ سرٌّ مَصون

وَلَيسَ لَدَيهمُ سرٌّ مَصون

فَلا يَك مِنكَ في أَحد يَقينٌ

فَلا يَك مِنكَ في أَحد يَقينٌ

And no secret is kept safe with them.

They have no secret kept safe

So place no unquestioning trust in anyone.

So do not be certain of anyone

فَإِنَّك لَم يَخنك أَخ أَمين

فَإِنَّك لَم يَخنك أَخ أَمين

وَلَكن قَلَّما تَلقى أَمينا

وَلَكن قَلَّما تَلقى أَمينا

For no trustworthy brother has betrayed you,

For no loyal brother has betrayed you

But rarely do you meet someone trustworthy.

But rarely will you find one loyal
