وَمُهفهفٍand a slender youth سلبَstole العُقولminds بِحُسنهwith his beauty
وَبِنورand with the light of صُبحdawn جَبينهhis brow إِذwhen أَسفَراit shone forth
And a slender youth stole minds with his beauty,
With a tender smile he stole away reason,
and with the dawn-light of his brow when it shone forth.
His luminous brow at dawn when day did break.
فَغَداso he began يُبارزنيto duel with me بِأَسمرwith the dusky lance of قَدّهhis stature
وَاِزدادand grew تيهاًin haughtiness فَاِعتَلىthen exalted himself وَتَكَبّراand grew proud
So he began to duel with me with the dusky lance of his stature,
He came to rival me with his dark lashes,
and grew more haughty, then exalted himself and grew proud.
And so increased my bewilderment and pride.
ياO هاجِريmy forsaker لَمّاwhen رَأىhe saw شَغفيmy passion بِهِfor him
لِمَwhy ليto me بَعَثتyou sent الطَيفthe dream-apparition فيin طَلبpursuit of الكَرىslumber
O my forsaker, who shunned me when he saw my passion for him,
O you who fled, why when he saw my passion,
why did you send me the phantom in pursuit of slumber?
Did you send this phantom in quest of ruin?
حَسبيenough for me ضنىًwasting جِسميmy body بِهَجركfrom your desertion وَالقلىand hatred
ماnot كانَwas شَأنthe lot of محبّكمyour lover أَنto يُهجَراbe forsaken
Enough for me is my body's wasting from your desertion and hatred.
Your disdain suffices my body in your absence,
It was not your lover's lot to be forsaken.
It is not the way of lovers to abandon.
إِنّindeed الَّذيthe one who خَلقcreated الغَرامpassionate love هُوَhe الَّذيthe one who
ذلّيmy abasement لِعزّكbefore your might قَدindeed دَرىhe knew إِذwhen قَدَّراhe decreed
Indeed, the one who created passionate love is the one
He who created passion, He is the one
who knew my abasement before your might when he decreed it.
Who humbled me to your glory as was fated.
أَقصرcurtail جَفاكyour cruelty فَإِنّfor indeed مِنthe one who خلقcreated الهَوىlove
خلقcreated السلوّforgetting love فَلاso do not يَغرّكdeceive you ماwhat جَرىhappened
Curb your cruelty, for the one who created love
Forgive his short unkindness, for in love's nature
created forgetfulness; so do not let what has happened deceive you.
Lies harm, so do not let what's past dismay you.
