Alas for love! Who will aid a lovesick man who has not attained his desire?

The oryxes' captive, his tears streaming in torrents,

His wasting plain to see, with a passion that has afflicted him with sorrow.

He loves the gazelles, and love of the white gazelles overpowers him.

The embers of sorrow never cease to keep vigil with him.

What has it gained? Alas, my heart remains held hostage,

Hoping for a meeting, while the gazelles haughtily abandon it.

When he gazes, his eye bewitches minds.

Beneath night's darkness, a moon whose features shine.

Rich in fragrance, his rosy cheek is sweet fruit for the plucking.

Among the people, he is too exalted for doubt to draw near him.

Ah, how often I have shielded my ear from whoever reproached me!

I sought to hate him, even as I dreaded it.

Is there any reproach, when the wine of the lips is a cup of bliss?

O man of reason, do you see an equal who rivals him?

I see nothing beyond the wishes I have cherished in him,

Save generosity—and glory's faithful guardian spreads it.

Piety's full moon: when I recite praise before him,

Lofty of summit, his noble deeds intone my tribute.

Abundant in generosity, large-hearted—how many favors he has bestowed!

His gifts pour forth from bounty whose first offerings were lavish.

A gallant man risen high; every quality he gained was beautiful,

Until he ascended, when his proud achievements vied in glory.

He is not to be feared, for he is the rain of kindness when it pours.

When he attacks, his cleaving swords flash with might.

He attained his wishes—may he never waste away!—finding bliss and fulfilled hopes,

Until he won, triumphant in whatever he hastens to undertake.
