If my soul is content with sustenance within reach,
If I'm content with what little I gain
Which my hand and forearm obtain through toil,
Through toil of hand and sweat of brow

فكنthen be ياO زمانيmy time موعديmy threatener أوor مساعديmy helper
I am safe from all the turns of events;
I'll be safe from misfortune's endless pain
Then, O my Time, threaten me or aid me.
So time, be now my aide, make good thy vow
أليسis it not قضاthe decree of الأفلاكthe celestial spheres فيin دورهاtheir turning بأنto the effect that

Is it not the decree of the spheres, in their turning, that
Do not the stars in their rounds ordain
They turn every favorable influence into ill fortune?
That joy returns after sorrow's plough?

So, soul, be patient in your resting place: only
Have patience, O my soul, restrain
With the collapse of the foundations do its heights [apparently: fall].
Thy tears though all things crumble now

And suppose I made the two Shi‘ra stars my dwellings,
The poets made their dwelling in my mind
And my stairways stood above where the two Farqad stars hang:
And built their stairs above my starry eyes
متىwhen ماever (emphasis) دنتdrew near دنياكyour world كانتwas مصيبةًa calamity
فواand oh! عجباًwhat a wonder! منat ذاthis القريبthe near one المباعدthe estranging one
Whenever your world draws near, it is a calamity;
Whene'er you're close, you're but a touch unkind
And oh, how strange this near yet estranging thing!
How strange that one so near should prove unwise

فشتانthen how different! حالاًin condition كلevery ساعٍone who strives وقاعدand one who sits idle
If the harvest of life is death,
If life's reward is but a grave assigned
How different, then, the lot of every striver and every idler!
How different the states of low and high!
