زجيت دهراً طويلاً في التماس أخ

يرعى ودادي إذا ذو خلةٍ خانا

I spent a long time in search of a brother,

I sought for long a loyal friend

Who would cherish my affection when a friend proved false.

To tend affection should a comrade cheat.

فكم ألفت وكم آخيت غير أخٍ

فكم ألفت وكم آخيت غير أخٍ

وكم تبدلت بالإخوان إخوانا

وكم تبدلت بالإخوان إخوانا

So often I grew attached, and so often I took as a brother one who was no brother;

How many a thousand I have found and bound

And how often I exchanged brothers for other brothers.

And how my loving coterie has grown!

وقلت للنفس لما عز مطلبها

وقلت للنفس لما عز مطلبها

بالله لا تألفي ما عشت إنسانا

بالله لا تألفي ما عشت إنسانا

And I said to my soul, when its wish proved hard to attain:

Yet when ambition mocked my questing soul,

By God, do not grow attached to any human being as long as you live.

I said “O heart, seek not forever one.”
