You were stirred to longing; the faded traces roused you,

where sandy slopes crept toward al-Abraqin,

then by Dhat al-Qur, from Dhu Suwayqa,

to Shariʿ, over which the obliterating winds swept.

After you, a wild, wandering wind lingered there,

a summer wind blowing dust, along with thundering rains.

As though the tribe's dwellings, after their people departed,

were a book in ink, adorned by its pages.

It has faded; all have gone far from those dwellings, though once were seen

budding-breasted maidens of an age, and older unmarried women there.

They lead, with the cords of longing and desire,

men, though the women are virtuous and untamable.

So, after the break with Umm Bahdal, are you

despairing of one who denies hope, distant in affection?

They turn men of reason from sound judgment to folly,

and the wayward, sociable man longs for them.

I realized in al-Dahna and al-Daww that it

was parting from her, confirmed by ill-omened birds.

So I yielded willingly; in severance there is relief,

when overwhelming suspicions drive doubt back.

And union with her is only like something you lost,

when snatchers seized it from your hands.

I left Jarir with a disgrace he cannot mend,

nor do groping hands avoid him.

I struck Jarir's head with what he could not unravel

by rebuttal; only crushing calamities can wear you down.

The father of al-Khatafa and the sons of Muʿid and Muʿrid,

and testicle-lickers—you compare them, you son of a she-ass!

Petty wretches, lowborn and vile, as though

Jarir, son of al-Maragha, had fashioned them deficient.

And base fathers mutilated him, converging

in him; contemptible mothers snatched him away.

You ran for Yarbuʿ with ill luck, as ran

Dahis toward a finish that led to death.

And Yarbuʿ withholds its help from the neighbor,

and nothing restrains Yarbuʿ from evil.

They are the stranger's misery; none has pitched camp

in their precinct except a habitual thief or a wretch.

And Yarbuʿ's dwelling, when a guest comes to it,

is to him no different from smooth, barren wastes.

What a wretched rescuer of women carried pillion at dusk,

and a wretched stopping-place for a guest when the water is frozen!

    بِها مِن مَنيِّ العَبدِ رَطِبٌ وَيابِسُ

    Yarbuʿ wipes its ignoble mustaches;

on them is the slave's semen, wet and dry.

A clinging stain upon them—death cannot crush its shame,

even if obliterating winds sweep over the graves.

When a son of Yarbuʿ comes sneaking up to you

at a meal—for the fellow diner is a furtive snatcher—

then say to the son of Yarbuʿ, 'Will you not wash

your mustaches, away from me? They are ill omens.'

I marveled at the misery Riyah encountered,

and what fire they borrowed from me; evil has its fire-seeker.

    عَوى وَلِشَدّاتِ الأُسودِ فَرائِسُ

    They were angry over a dog of Kulayb that I mauled;

it howled, and lions' onslaughts have their prey.

So taste what Kulayb encountered; for indeed

you have come to grief, and ruinous fortunes felled you.

For God has clothed no man, over his skin,

in baseness except what the man of Riyah wears.

They wear garments of baseness that they never wear out:

tunics about their necks, and hooded cloaks.

You boasted of the day of women carried pillion, yet you were

wretched horsemen at dusk, when they were taken behind riders.

As though, on the parts of their faces you behold,

lay a tar salve, overlaid by their noses.

They suffered misery from riding pillion with a battalion,

and before riding pillion with the army, they were already wretched.

And among us is he who rescued his neighbor at the Tigris,

out of protective honor; fierce, biting bull-camels rescued him.

And we killed Maʿqil and the son of Mursal,

with keen-edged blades brought down on helmet-crests.

And our spears reached ʿAmr, brother of Dudan,

so his host was left wretched at our hands.

And we protected your women at al-Kulab,

and held al-Jawf's frontier while you sat idle.

And Dabba forced semen into your mouth; then

Muqaʿis gave you your fill of rage on the day of al-Ahwazayn.
